Re: recording with house hold items
i recorded a percusionist once who had brought in a plastic garbage can. he played it as a mock kick and a pair of conga's as the mock snares. i put a d112 right inside and it sounded great. talking with him afterwards i asked if he had selected that garbage can specifically over others or at least ...

Re: Help me calibrate ProTools
i read about a mastering engineer once(name withheld) that purposely pushes his gear into the red. the trick is that each step in the chain is just touching it very very slightly rather than the weight being bore by one specific unit. i questioned this for a long time. but the guys stuff sounds good...

(re: vocal overdub notation system)"Suspect spots get a question mark or two. Really screwed up spots get x's. Should something go by that I wouldn't want anyone else to hear (perhaps embarrassing to the artist), I'll put a tiny swastika under a spot; should that spot be so egregiously bad that it s...

the pully/mic system is what i've heard of before. i think a good addition could be to have some curtains up near the mic that could be lowered if you wanted to suck up some of the high freq. i'm jealous. your studio's gonna kick ass. i read about turtle studios once that they have an old stone tunn...

Re: Newbie seeks advice
there is so many ways you can go. i'll admit that i haven't researched consumer cheap things like you're asking for very much. if this will be anything more than just a one time toy i'd say save up and get an M-Box from digidesign. it comes with a limited version of their software 'Pro Tools' which ...

Re: Powered Monitors..... ????
professor had a great point there. one of the advantages of passive is that you can spend the money in chunks. get a garage sale reciever and spend the money on better speakers. b & w's are an amazing line. then down the line it's not to hard to get a decent amp. i got an ART SLA-1 for dirt cheap. i...

woa....tough one. i don't know of one specific device but i tried to think of something anyways. didn't come up with much but i think this would work. violin pickup --to-- small outboard mic pre(like the summit audio 2BA-221 Mic & Line Module) --to-- reamp (i think) --to-- pedals --to-- di --to-- co...

what ever you do DO NOT BUY GENELEC's!!!!! we have 1031's in two rooms at my work and those pieces of crap are so far from flat it makes me sick. they have this natural smiley face eq that makes everything sound bright and boomy even when it is far from it. they have high and low tilt designed to co...

Re: converters on consumer CD Burner
my studio is really happy with an HHB cdr-850 right now. one of the great things i like is that it has unbalanced -10 outs as well as balanced +4's. those +4 ones come in supper handy when you want to compare a mix you're working on to a reference album. thus you can just plug the burner/player outs...

Re: bedroom to "liveroom" a la plywood?
not that it really helps but i wanted to express my frustration with the whole live room thing. a great sounding live room would have it's pre-delay diffused just a bit so that you had a wonderful bright and natural reverberation rather than a harsh echo slapping you in the face all at once. i was v...

if you were to copy him with the polarity reversed and then sum him to mono you might just be able to phase him out.

Re: tube plate?
about 5 months ago i had an engineer doing some work at our studio from out of town. he mentioned a story about a studio in toronto that he had worked at many years prior. it seems that the studio had this giant plate-verb in their basement that had asked for repairs too many times. they ended up ge...
