Re: live to 2 track
Two track recording experience that was probably my best lo-tech recording triumph to date: (if you don't count my mono LDC recording of an acapella group in a museum, just so I can milk the extra 74 minutes of Minidisc time).... Anyhoo, the last band project I was in (which was just a drummer and m...

Re: 2 amps, 1 guitar.
IMHO, the cheaper ABY boxes really kill tone. Some other options:
Z Vex SHO (has dual outs- the option I use, and recommended by others on the board)
VHT Valvulator
Lehle
Framptone
Matchbox?
Check out the harmonycentral.com effects database for comments.

Re: Short-scale bass recommendations?
I think Danelectro short scale basses are great for recording and dirt cheap if you can find them. If you want something more pro quality in this style, try Jerry Jones.

Re: Minneapolis TapeOp tonight
I had a blast too. Actually, the cool thing was the representation was varied in all the right ways (music styles- pre war blues, death metal, indie, etc.) and consistent in all the right ways (everybody was super nice, everybody was gainfully employed, and everybody was way open-minded). Oh, and so...

Ooh! A couple of others (if early 90s count):
Gene Holder produced Yo La Tengo albums
Earthy / organic production: Roger Moutenot

Re: Clean and Pristine
If clean means uncluttered (instead of sterile), I'd say Brian Paulson and Brad Wood would be up there. Even though their best stuff was early 90's.

Minneapolis TapeOp tonight
Just a reminder that we're trying to meet tonight at the Bryant Lake Bowl at 7pm. I'm escaping from a family gathering to be there, so make my day and show up ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

"Broadcast mics"
Can someone characterize for me the qualitative and application differences between these broadcaster mics: EV RE20 Sennheiser MD421 Shure SM7 They seem to be very popular with all sorts of applications. I got to use the 421 for a DJ mic at my college radio station. Part of me wants to go back to dy...

Re: Patch cables.?
You can go exotic (Mogami, Canare) or their own proprietary PGS brand ("Pretty Good Stuff"). I just got an order of their PGS snakes, and I'm pleased (although their sales tracking must be pretty low tech- I had to call 3 times to get it right). Dirt cheap- and they can build custom length cords (I ...

Just turned 35, just bought a house, girlfriend was a record clerk back in the day (just like the movie High Fidelity), analyze interest rates (or what's left of them) for a living. Played piano growing up, guitar in college, theater sound design until 5 years ago. Porta 01 in 1995, still clinging t...

Fender Pro Junior- it can actually sound louder in a practice room than some full-sized amps.

Re: whole band in one room vs. amps in isolation
Call me a luddite, but why not do multiple takes per song - bleed be damned- and forget about punch in edits.... pick the best take, maybe add an extra vocal or guitar track, and be done with it. The times I've recorded that way seem to have a better vibe than something that I edited to death.
