Re: 'Undiscovered' tube amps
I've posted it elsewhere, but two others: Sovtek MIG-60 and Kalamazoo Model 2 (crap speaker, but hook up a closed-back 2x12 and stand back...

Re: Guitar tone
I'd respectfully disagree that Eddie Van Halen and Billy Gibbons have the "chunky" tone that started this thread. Not that they don't have any tone at all, of course, but they definitely occupy the high freq end of things.

Re: Guitar tone
You may have answered your own question. The key is to dial *down* the distortion, especially when recording. My rule of thumb is whatever you think you need, dial that down by another 25%, and make up in volume. For amps, I like Sovteks. Even though Sovtek amps are Marshall JTM45-like, their *clean...

Re: unbiased mic reviews
ozraves- Thanks for posting your remarks on mojopie.com.... now I understand why everybody rags on the NT1 even though I love mine (I'm pretty sure I got one of the first ones). A pox on every audio company that sends reviewers a souped up piece of gear, and surreptitiously swapping out for cheap pa...

Re: Guitar Cab Emulator
I think many of the cab emulators (by themselves) work better for live settings than in recording settings. Most of the active emulators tend to either be rather bright (which works well through PA speakers). Passive emulators tend to be thick and dull (e.g. Koch and Red Box Pro), and not much in th...

Kalamazoo Model 2 is also supposedly Champ-like.

Re: best cheap Low-watt recording amp?
Eek! Don't reamp a nanohead! I'm not an electronics expert, but putting the speaker out into a Reamp, even if it's only 1/2 watt, will get you some melted electronics. (For the record, I like both my Fender Pro Jr and my Kalamazoo Model 2. Best when I patch the amp into some Bassman 2x12s). Speaker...

Re: London Calling engineering notes and kick drums
Forget the mic choices- what about the "tackling the singer" method for getting emotional vocal takes from Joe Strummer?!?!?!

I always felt like the NT1 was a great room mic. Distance seems to tame some of the brashness of the mic. I even used it to record an acapella group in a museum, and it sounded great. Also, got a great recording on a jazz drum kit. 4' in front, pointed right at the drummer.

Re: Hunting for an acoustic...
I think the Martin 15 series is the all around best buy. They fit the best for a professional / road worthy guitar between $500 and $1000.
I can also vouch for the Martin 1 series.... I have a 000-1, and it's turned out to be a cannon of a guitar (especially for a fingerpicking size).

I got one of those plastic drawer carts too. I bubble wrap the ones that I don't use often.
You can also copy ZVex pedals, and take a washcloth and tie it up with a hair elastic.

searching for an HDR
Thinking about getting a standalone hard disk recorder. Of course, if I'm willing to take out a 2nd mortgage, an Otari Radar would be cool. But I'm thinking pretty basic. Choices: Mackie SDR, Alesis HD24, Fostex closeout 24 trk, Tascam MX2424. I want to use this as a tracking rig, and maybe dump it ...
