Re: any help would be lovely...
Not to subvert any plans, but you may want to think about non-school plans, like buying a 4- or 8-track recorder and experimenting. With as many web and book resources out there (which didn't even exist 5 years ago) I think it's possible to learn the basic concepts and terminology online. That leave...

Temple of Sound
I picked up a paperback copy of "Temple of Sound" (Jim Cogan and William Clark), and I'm really enjoying it. I think it has a ton of TapeOp like guerrilla ideas for studios (e.g. cutting up 2x4 ceiling tiles into thirds, making pyramids out of them, and hanging them from the ceiling. Courtesy- RCA B...

Their unbalanced patch bays with switchable normaling is a godsend- I can't think of a more painful death than rewiring a 48 channel bay

Re: RNP: Are you kidding?!
I don't have the new VLZ PRO preamps, but comparing the RNP with the VLZ preamps, I thought the RNP was a step up for sources that require a "rounding" or upper mid thickening, at least compared to the Mackie pres. I still think the Mackie preamps are great for distance miking and live PA work. Eith...

Tigervomit's avatar is pretty fun too, in a cartoon way.

Re: rules
The rules that seem to work the best for me have to do with making decisions by limiting options. Time limits, track limits, dropping an instrument, no edits or punch-ins, etc. They have a way on focusing on performance and intuition rather than technique. I think that's why the Oblique Strategies d...

Re: FMR RNP opinions?
Well, I finally fired it up last night. Oh. My. God. For everybody who owns Neve this and API that, the RNP is probably nothing to write home about. But for the rest of us, the proletariat masses who suffer with mixer preamps that either sound like broken crystal or sewer sludge, this was a quantam ...

Tom Verlaine (Television) on Marquee Moon. Richard Thompson on Shoot Out the Lights.
Dry and one take. Don't need no stinkin' Pro Tools!
(For over the top effects and single live take, it's still hard to top Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner....)

Re: A to D converters
A budget stealth option might be the Flying Cow / Calf from Midiman/MAudio.
I think they do 24/96 now, but I've read reviews that the subjective sound quality was very good and "non-digital".
The Calf comes in either A/D or D/A. The Cow does both.

How about T-Pins? If you have drywall or even something heavier, you could just pin them up to the wall.

Alternatives to foam and fiberglass
So here's something to put up on the board (literally): Are there alternatives to foam (e.g. Auralex, Sonex) and fiberglass that can be used for acoustic treatment? I was thinking about the possibilities of ceiling tiles, and I also think of my last practice space, which had discarded corporate cube...

Just got mine this week (Thanks, Humbucker.com!), but I won't be able to rig it up for a few days. I'll let you know what I think of it.

Another possibility: amp tubes. You may want to put a fresh set on them- especially if they're microphonic.

Re: uses for ill-informed gear purchases
My Marantz CD burner makes a great rack shelf for my pedals :D (It's actually not that bad. It's just that I have bought quite a bit of stuff right before the prices got slashed, so I didn't win in the bargain department, but I still had something to work with to teach myself how to use the stuff. G...
