Tales about downsizing

Delurking.... I wanted to start a thread about hearing real-life stories about downsizing your setup. I'm less interested in the specific gear, and more about everyone's experience of going from outboard to ITB (in the box, whether it's workstation based, laptop based, or even tablet or phone based)...

My favorite piezo pickup hands down is a Mcintyre Feather.... cheap, simple, sounds great. Actually, pickups that are mounted under the bridge plate sounds better than under the bridge itself. You can also get those combo mic/pickup rig, use more mic than pickup. You can also try a Fishman Aura peda...

+1 on HD24. Although it's sweet to use lightpipe to connect to the deck (I do that with my ZED R16 board), it has 24 I/O and A/D/A conversion (12 if you have the XR version for the higher 96kHz). If you already have a board you like, and have the cords or snake, it's hard to beat it. Oh- and it's pr...

If you're looking for room in a crowded mix, slightly panning the different tracks in different positions can make a huge difference. Even between 11:30 and 12:30 is plenty.

Original Poster: so how's it going? To elaborate on my post (done quickly from work): checking polarity on your speaker wire is important if your "weird" bass sound is phasey or hollow. How do I know? Hmmmmm... from past experience? If you're getting crazy nulls and boosts, JWL is right on with the ...

Make sure your speaker wires aren't reversed.

If that's OK, monitor at lower volumes.

Search for KennyLusk's positive comments on the Zed14.

Since you already have the AD/DA, hard to go wrong with any of the ZED series.

A&H ZED R16 also has 16 channels of more than decent AD/DA in addition to the 16 channel mixer. If your Audiofire has lightpipe, you can add it to the board for 8 additional ins.

When I had my 238s, I used Maxell XLII 60. Given the 3.75 ips speed, that got you 15 minutes of taping time. Worked and sounded great.

I'm not entirely sure or convinced the shorter tapes were better quality, and very difficult to find.

Not cheap, but the Fulltone SupaTrem is great for rounded tremelo tones.... but if you're looking for a sharp "helicopter" trem, look elsewhere.
