I like a lot of older and newer music - my taste isn't rooted in one particular era, although I'll admit I do have a massive sweet tooth for newer artists that are strongly rooted in nostalgia. To some people that sort of thing may seem too derivative, but I love it. For the sake of the question at ...

Any particular suggestions for darkening and fattening? The cool thing is you can accomplish multiple things on that list at once with this plug. For darkening/fattening: On a vocal, I'd try turning the mix knob completely to 'wet' (default setting), using the 'T' (tube) emulation setting, bringing...

Learning the feel of how to use saturation in mixing is a lot like the early (yet perpetually ongoing) phase of learning to effectively use compression, or any other tool for that matter. It takes some time to develop not only the sense of how and why to use it, but most importantly, the ability to ...

I was recently messing around with the same general technique - guitar and vocal into a single mic and really liked what I was hearing. (And keep in mind, I'm generally not a one mic on multiple sources kinda guy at all.) The mic I used was a figure 8 condenser, so your results will definitely vary ...

My engineer buddy was over at my home studio yesterday and said he was envious of the sound of my monitoring setup. He works at a studio with a $6,000 monitoring rig whereas I have a $300 pair of monitors! I swear by the Alesis M1 MKII Active pair that I've been using for going on about 8 years now....

There's a crowd funding effort going on right now for almost exactly what you're describing. Nob. Put the cursor over anything and the knob controls it. Also some other unique functions but otherwise a very simple device. This would be perfect. Or the Teensy DIY approach The Scum described. I don't...

The Kaoss Pad would have a lot more features than I'd need! DIY? Teensy 2.0 with a pot, slider or rotary encoder (+optional LED ring). This definitely seems like it's on the right track. Disclaimer: I'm very technologically challenged - it's safe to assume that I know absolutely nothing about electr...

Simple control surface solution
Anyone have any ideas for the simplest way to set up a single parameter control surface? Ideally, it'd just be a single knob. What I'd like to do with it is assign a single plugin parameter at a time - what initially comes to mind is a pitch shifter in order to "play" a generated harmony part for a ...

Just an update - I ended up getting a Studio Projects LSD-2. New, out of the box, it had a faulty connection in one of the capsules so that the signal cut in and out depending on how it was positioned. Their customer service was really cool though and they repaired it for free. Also, on the upper ro...

Dang, nice! I hadn't seen the video for that one. A few questions though... What do you think the guy behind the keyboardist's head is doing/playing? He's holding a guitar, but I only really hear the bass and slide parts. Also, the guy on the far left? Maybe they strategically shot it at that angle ...

Wow, very cool. "Rango II" is blues-y, organic, and tasty, with what sounds like some Robert Randolph and Richard Tee references in there, but that "ear candy/production values" section at 2:50! Crazy man, crazy! All their stuff sounds so good/funky/tight. I really like the title track from their 2...
