I bought a Beyerdynamic M400 (Soundstar II) for $50 on craigslist yesterday with the box and all documentation. Used it a a gig later that day and it sounded fantastic. The sound man said the eq on the channel was flat. I was going to turn it on eBay but for that money and sound I'm keeping it.

So, still looking. I've been told and read that cache size doesn't matter and that it totally matters. Looking up the Lacie rugged drives, they do not list cache size under its specifications, so I assume it's low. The OWC drive is at 16mb for the 500g model, 32mb for the 1T, and 64mb for the 2T. Th...

I've searched for the specs on the 2T and I've come up empty. Odd that I can pull it from the drive itself. I'm betting it was 32mb, maybe even 16mb. I had no idea what I was doing when I bought it so now it's a massive back up drive. The OWC 2T drive is 64mb. $195, but if it runs smoothly it should...

External Hard Drive Question

I know this might be the equivalent to asking about the best compressor under $200, but here goes. My rig is a Macbook Pro, Motu828 MKII firewire. Last year I bought a 2 Terabyte external hard drive to record on, a Western 7200 rpm. It was noticeably slower than the Lacie that had filled up. A recor...

I think that's a good question. It depends on, maybe, what they did during the stereo mix. Was it simple panning or did they eq differently?
I have a feeling it's not as simple as putting you stereo in mono. Any more thoughts out there?

I have a couple of 1589B pres, but the output trannies are pretty hissy when you crank them up. Jensen replacements are about $70 each, or I bake and re-pot them. Could you explain just how you do that, or reference a info source? Is this how you do it? This is exactly how I was going to go about i...

I bought four 1566A mic pres last year on the eBay for $85 each, immaculate condition. I thought I was going to make a ton of money selling them for what they usually go for ( last one on eBay went for $800) until I tested them out. I will probably never sell these. I use them with AKG D200E mics on...

Thanks for posting the blog link, very cool. Giant pedal boards can be kind of obnoxious, yes. I played with a guy who had two gigantic pedal boards. He played a Balalaika. I used to only use a tuner, an overdrive and a boost and one of the bands I was in asked me to not use so many pedals. It didn'...

Yeah, it's hard to repair the charred remains of a cosmonaut who entered the earth's atmosphere without his heat shield up and somehow got inside your microphone. Did you try WD-40?

What's unethical about the Spotify model? Are they distributing your music without your consent? No. You're right. If you sign up for it at .005 cents per play, then everything is as it should be, ethically. If you don't like it, then pass on it. It's like non-mandatory share cropping right now, th...

Man, I love playing the Devil's advocate. One of the arguments for using Spotify is that it's legal, as if therefore it's ethical. Big difference between the two. There's lot's of things that are illegal that maybe shouldn't be and vice versa. This might end up being a fine example of that if the Sp...

I think it's funny/tragic that this is finally happening. When I was young I remember thinking that there would be no way the Beatles would be forgotten. People sure do get passionate about their music, though.

If I sell the CD back to the store, I wipe the mp3s of that album off my computer. You are the 1%. :) I've said this before and I'll say it again: We are in an industry in which the products we make can be replicated, ad infinitum. That's not the best business to be in. Just think about that simple...
