So long as your dynamics are reasonably controlled with compressors, then I usually find I don't need to ride the faders much, if at all. As a general rule, I only ever do anything in the studio if it *needs* to be done. I'm a big believer in "less is more" and not overcomplicating things, or doing ...

Hey Nick,

Yeah that's what I personally prefer as well. Keeps everything as real as possible. But sometimes you get really difficult clients/jobs and have to do the big editing thing.... a necessary evil these days I guess....

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, I've had trouble getting a decent sound out of a d12 as well. Occasionally I hit on it, other times I go for something else.

I'm curious to know about the new D12 VR. I know it;s nothing like the original, but it looks like it could be good mic!

Recording Vintage Drums

Hi all, I recently had a rather enjoyable experience in the studio recording a wonderful Gretsch kit from the early 70's. The song was a laid back jazz standard, and the sound we were after was "vintage".... It worked out really well and I decided to write it up.... thought some of you might be inte...

compressors?

What about compressor choice.....?

Some like the dbx 160, but I generally find it to be too obvious with its hard knee.
On the other hand the over-easy dbx units (eg. 165) are great and smooth.

But an 1176 (or similar fet clones) is probably my favorite overall bass comp.

Thoughts?

Awesome advice, Emenel. I know what you mean about fuzz effects killing the bottom end!
I'll have to try your double amping method sometime soon.

Cheers,

any more inverting and I think I'll be ill ;)

...actually I think Gloria Estefan had a song about inverting phase back in the 90's.... Turn it up, turn it up, turn it upside down!
