Acoustic Guitar Size in a Bass Heavy Mix

If I want to record an Acoustic and the rhythm section is already quite bass heavy, would a smaller sized guitar be a better choice? Or will EQ allow any size to work just as well?

Hopefully I'm not being too vague for a proper answer.

Thanks.

Re: Acoustic Guitar in Untreated Room

Open your closet, the one with all the clothes in it. Face the open closet and put the Microphone between you and all the clothes. This will also tighten things up a lot. This is actually what I've been doing for vocals. I'd like to try using a better mic than my MCA SP1. Also, when I get better eq...

Acoustic Guitar in Untreated Room

Before I go into the studio, I want to record my songs, as best I can, at home. Then I can let the engineer decide what needs to be redone to get it radio ready. I can only afford a weekend lockout, so the less I need to redo per song, the better. I don't have any room treatment, so I'll have to get...

Adding Outboard Gear to Digital Setup

I have a small setup in my bedroom...MacBook Pro 14" (M1 Pro) w/ UA Apollo w/ 4 pres. I want to rent some outboard gear to record my album. I'll need a couple mics for vocals, acoustic guitar n percussion (tambos, shakers, etc). I don't have the cash for a ton of stuff, so I'm wondering if I should ...

Re: Mic Parts S-12 and T-12 Mics

I've built 3 kits from Microphone Parts, one of them has the RK-12 capsule like the T-12. It has a different circuit, I chose this circuit: https://microphone-parts.com/collections/mod-kits/products/t84-55-circuit-kit with the T 6.5 XF transformer - intentionally wanting a high level of second orde...

Mixing Headphones

If u had to mix with headphones, and could only pick one pair (sub $200), which would it be? This is my situation. I already have H280 Pro's, but I'm not a fan of closed back for mixing. I also have Soundworks SoundID (formally Reference 4) for Headphones. I was thinking Sony MDR 7506, cuz they're a...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

Figure 8 with the null pointed at the guitar. There's a reason that a two figure 8 set-up is the go to for singer songwriter gigs. It's the best isolation you can get. Ya, I'm familiar with this technique, but I only have the 2 SP1's and a SM57...and I've only saved around 200 so far for a new voca...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

Uh, while they are Coke and Pepsi for a reason? (Peavey 520/Beyderdynamic M88) (Matter of fact, the M88 would be my bet to almost completely solve this problem...) Shit, I forgot the inevitable suggestion that the slightly less popular M88 is as good, and in some applications possibly better. I ima...

Besides above, do you have another guitar with dead strings or that you could string with flats?
If "dead strings" means old and worn, then no.

Flats are acoustically more quiet than wound? I've never tried them. I'm gonna grab a pack and try that....

Thanks.

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

Try doing spectral edits right on the spectrogram (in standalone mode or via RX Connect). You should be able to see exactly where the picking sound is, select that range throughout the entire track, and use simple gain reduction to minimize the picking. There's also a "Repair Assistant" which might...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

-Place some mass between your head and the guitar, like a piece of wood. If all else fails, use RX! Any suggestion on how to prop up the barrier? I've tried RX (I only have Elements tho). I use Click, and start with the Random Clicking preset. I first turn sensitivity up to around 8. If it's really...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

I know a guy who mics the elec guitar acoustically just to get the pick attack. Of course it's a consideration if it interferes with vocal comp/editing ... I do like what it adds, for certain songs. When I do decide to use it, I want it on it's own track, probably with the drum/percussion reverb. I...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

What mic are you using? Something like a 441 or SM7 probably wouldn't pick up as much picking . Can you hear it in the mix, or just when the vocal is solo'd? MCA SP1. Yes, it's in the mix and LOUD. I can here the entire riff as well, but it's the annoying, sometimes ear piercing, sound of the pick ...

Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

When I record vocals n play my electric guitar (DI), I pick up a lot of the pick attack and it ruins the take. I have the mic setup in my closet, with the back of the capsule pointing at a rack of clothes. I stand at the threshold, so I can lean my head in. Is there any kind of trick to isolating th...

Re: Tape Plugins

I also actually calibrate it as I used to do my old ATR102, by sending a sine wave of 50, 100, 1K, and 10K to it, and adjusting its respective knobbery. I then save that preset for the song mix I am about to print. Thanks for a that info. So you send each of those sine wave freq to the ATR and then...
