Re: Picking a pre to build... Advice? (SCA)
Judging from their "parents" (haven't heard the SCA clones yet) the Neve 1272 is also colored, just in a different way than the API 312. The 1272 tends to have a darker and slower tone than the 312. For a "first" all-purpose pristine pre for vocals and acoustic instruments, I'd personally pick the J...

Re: choosing an older analog board....
What's the general opinion on an MCI 636 console, say, if it were about $2500? Specs are: not used in 5 years, sold as-is, excellent sound when last used. A good investment or money pit with a 'has been' name tag? If I were buying it "as is", the least I would do is a signal path check on all the c...

Re: Can Sampled Drums Ever Sound Real?
Then get 2 condensors for overheads and a hi hat mic of your choice. buy a hi hat, a ride and some cymbals. then play those parts yourself. IMO, cymbals are the toughest thing for a sample to emulate well. The infinite variations are more detectable on cymbals than they are on drums. This is good a...

Re: Quantegy update 1/30/05
I think tape will come back. atr, and studer still make machines. I just cant wait till some company starts to make an analog machine with some super nice a/d converters so you can go from the analog machine strait to a cpu. The best of both worlds. track analog mix digi, track analog mix analog. t...

Re: Quantegy update 1/30/05
Well If you think about it ATR makes 1/2 new tape machines. I mean they make new electronics, and that's half of the machine. Yes, and a fine job they do, at a price. What happens when they run out of vintage Ampex machines to rehab? People are making new Mellotrons today, they are selling. And Rol...

Re: Quantegy update 1/30/05
Tom Bennett, who worked with Ampex and Quantegy for 22 years, said that the market for audio tape will not grow. I don't know if I agree with this. With tape machines becoming more affordable recording on a tape machine has moved more from a necessity to an artistic choice. I wouldn't be surprised ...

Re: Masterlink DSP
Just remember... Please save mixes without the DSP in case someone else needs to apply some processing to your files (ie mastering). With discs as affordable as they are, always make several backup copies with both the processed and unprocessed files (and send both forward to mastering if it's an o...

Re: Masterlink DSP
For "quick fix" and "Finalizer" type stuff, I suppose it "works." I wouldn't run a client's mixes through it though. I'll use the limiter for reference copies where the track was recorded with a decent margin below 0dbFS or low average levels, just to bring it up into the usual realm of loudness. T...

Re: Best Vocal Chain Ever.. Opinions?
chetatkinsdiet- How old would you say is 'older' for the dbx 160x? thanks. IIRC...The 160 X is a descendent of the old 160; I think they were introduced in the early 80's and had unbalanced 1/4" I/O. Later the 160 XT came along, which was basically a transformer balanced version w/ XLR I/O. When th...
