Just watched the two videos on Monster Island TV. At the end of the second, the following is stated: 1. Buss the drums to a stereo compressor. 2. Buss the drums again, to another stereo compressor and buss the returns of the first compressor to this second one as well. 3. Use the returns of the com...

Finally getting back to this project - Roygbiv, thanks for the input, I've installed the Reaper plugins, and hope to spend some time on it this week. I'll also mess with routing again, but I'm totally in the box (Cubase SX), and find myself having to fudge it just a bit, as I don't think I can assi...

Sure. Based on the way I've seen the two techniques described and demonstrated in practice, though, they seem to be quite different. In Two Stage, one comp effects the quieter section, and is basically non-existant (masked) when things get louder. The second comp effects the louder sections, and ba...

Yeah, I've had that "Ass-u-me" thing happen before, but I thought the OP was talking "Two-Stage Compression" as per the TapeOp article, rather than Serial Compression, which can be another great approach, but nowhere near the same thing. I don't know ashcat. If you ask me, what Caffrey calls "Two S...

I guess I can dig that "it's easier..." thing, except that yo...

you can set up a rack so that the signal goes to compressor A, then to the outs, AND ALSO from compressor A to Compressor B, then to a fader then to the outs. SO you could do parallel or series, and adjust the volume along any point(s) in the chain. I think just setting two compressors is a lot les...

Sorry (kind of) to make a post that doesn't actually help you accomplish what you're trying. I don't use Tracktion. But this thing has kind of been bugging me after everybody keeps coming asking "Two-stage compression in DAW-X?" My question: Is it really necessary in the box? The idea is to have on...

I still don't get it. I spent a few hours trying this and my cymbals became way too loud and strident and the overall sound muddier and crowded. Do you use the same attack and release on both comps? Do you turn down the faders feeding the comps? Isn't it better to compress each drum mic separatly t...

5 pages and nobody mentions that Sonar already has a two stage compressor? It called VC 64. Its got eq too. I believe the new version that came with 7 has wet dry knobs too. For shame. for shame ps. in the computer nerd community I run with, a "hack" is a clever and unconventional way of doing some...

After enthusiastically reading this article about 5 times, I'm now finally getting around to mixing the 'space-rock' project I've been tracking to which this method will, I'm sure, apply splendidly. Now all I need to do is find a VST compressor plugin with a wet/dry control; anyone out there have a...

Mike, again, my tone was unwarranted, and a bit reactionary. You are right. I'm sorry. I hadn't read this last post yet, and I removed the word in question, because I realized in a message to Larry that as I had misinterpreted your intention of "hack," you misinterpreted what I meant by assimilatin...

The last thing to address is the idea of the fast attack/slow attack compression referred to twice in this thread, both one page back and more recently a few posts up. I'm not familiar with Harvey Gerst's example as referred to here, but I'm going to guess it's the technique of using one compressor...

I have no issue with your feelings, just with the resulting behavior. As far as "one of the people" who influenced you, I know who you're talking about and what was said - he and i discussed it at AES. He ahd the same issue with the word "hack" and the letter he was planning on writing was to take a...

"Craw in the ass" apology accepted and I'm not going to waste time analyzing whether the article was condescending or not, because obviously I don't think it was, yet if you felt condescended to, who can argue with that - it's the case of the old hassidic parable where both parties are right. The fi...
