Re: Toto
I can't believe you guys are seriously comparing Steely Dan with Toto ! Steely Dan wrote great pop songs, often from from a pretty skewed perspective lyrically - quite dark & cynical, and were musically adventurous without being self-indulgent. The production sound on something like Aja is very good...

Colds, fevers, shocks, heartache, bereavement, fear ,food & drink, drugs - all can induce alternate states of awareness to lesser or greater extents
All can be useful in a creative sense.

I know what you mean about Box Of Rain
I never heard any tuning probs with that years ago - but when I heard it the other day....man!
And CSN taught them how to sing 3 parts for that album!

TASCAM 34B Reel To Reel
I just bought a Tascam 34B and I'm pretty excited about getting it up & running. Everything seems fine, but the plastic record head cover is missing. I knew this beforehand though, and got the machine at a knock down price . Anyone have any thoughts on where I might try & source a replacement from? ...

Re: AKAI 4000DS Reel To Reel
Yeah, I guess that's the gamble. Seller says heads are in good condition, but that could mean anything... It's still very cheap, so it may be worthwhile. We'll see. Thanks for the input - btw, are reels easily available these days ( I think it uses 7" reels & it's a 1/4" machine) And do you have to ...

AKAI 4000DS Reel To Reel
I know Revox are the respected & time-served open reel default, but these Akai models go for much less 2nd hand :) Anyone have any experience with these? Avoid at all costs or a good machine to learn the basics on?....I've had no chance so far to use anything like this, but I'm thinking of recording...

Re: RESLO Vintage ribbon mics??
Cheers for the advice Al. I've done a little research on these and opinions vary widly, but most agree that they're not that great. However, I found another Reslo model ( SRI/L) for sale that does look very nice - it's got quite a long grill compared to the ones you normally see, and was maybe a del...
