Re: Problems with Mac Mini and Logic

Is it just happening with a specific impulse response? The impulse response file may be malformed or have some other quirk in the data that is incompatible with whatever code Apple uses to load an impulse response file. This is a typical edge case when loading various media formats, whether it be au...

Re: Basic home setup advice

Since you’re on Mac, I would seriously consider investigating Logic. The built in plugins are extremely high quality and are designed to work very efficiently, in many cases adding no latency. There are just so many features loaded in there, especially if you’re coming at it from a songwriting/music...

Re: Groove Tubes The Brick Blowing Fuses

Hey there, I have some of these. You need to set it up inside the unit first. Also, there were some later runs of the Brick with the label for the fuse revised to say 1 amp. Anyway, changing the fuse alone isn’t enough. This is a good description below of how to convert it from 120v to 230v: https:/...

Re: U195 and too many midrange mics

One thing about the 195 is that - if you like sticking to manufacturer servicing - if anything breaks in the future, David is in California. That’s easier and less pricy than international shipping that can be necessary with some mics. He has top notch equipment, an actual anechoic chamber that he c...

Re: Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

I’ve always had luck panning mono delays/reverbs/or room mics, to different spots...like, if guitar is center, then a mono spring reverb hard right, for example. Sometimes it “works” to ride that channel (or channels) throughout the song, bringing it up or down to create more energy. Sometimes thoug...

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

If it sounds good stop buying gear and just make records. Fuck all these forums and gear marketing. Oops, did I say that? Many years ago I was recording something with Steve Gursky, who used to be on the forums as “Loudist”. I asked him something like “Steve. You recorded CSN with the SM7. What was...

Re: Let's discuss spatial/immersive/ambisonic audio

Roughly 8-10 years ago I had started getting calls for work with 3D LED walls, creating various demos for hardware companies. Along the way, Apple had made a 3D sound player API, which was a little minimal but allowed sounds to be panned on a 3D axis and roughly match up to an OpenGL scene view. I h...

Re: Dave Grohl- Play (mic spotting)

That was really cool. I’ll just add that I’ve worked with the Foos, and I think they’re one of the more down to earth groups out there. Dave is pleasant and will chat it up with anyone. They don’t corner themselves off or put on a bunch of airs. They’re also extremely tight and professional. People ...

Re: When you love a LIMITER

If I’m mixing and have a moderate 2:1 ~ 4:1 compression on a given track, sometimes there might be something a little aberrant that pops out in a few places on a track, and hits the more moderate compression maybe a little too hard. The tone of some compressors can sort of shift when getting further...

Re: Does anyone use overheads?

Maybe it’s arguable but I don’t think it’s exactly possible to center both kick and snare through just two overheads. They both occupy different physical spaces, so it’s going to be one or the other in the center of the image. Personally, I think it pretty much is always more important to center th...

Re: Anyone using step up transformers in the studio?

The results will depend on the specific gear involved. Generally speaking, a decent transformer can give you several dB of hum/RF rejection, while reducing output by only a dB or two. You also tend to gain the ability to drive longer cable runs with less resulting signal loss or tonal shift. At the ...
