Re: 8 Different dynamic mics as overheads

I think it's funny that when you get down to it, there's no way to be really scientific about it. One way means the mics are in different places, and their bodies are likely bouncing higher frequencies into each other's capsules causing micro-delays, the other means it's very difficult to get a cont...

Re: Let's talk guitar-amp simulators

Amps, like tape and consoles, are done. Over. Sell them now before the market crashes even further - if you can. You know what? I think you're right. Last year I picked up a great UK-made AC30 for £400, which is about half what I would have considered a good price based on 10 years of buying/ selli...

Re: "On kicks with different mics like ya do"

I have pretty much a poverty level mic locker, but the last year it's been all about the RE20 for me. Vocals, bass, kick, guitar, it's hard to go wrong with it. Something lovely about the midrange, but also the way it captures everything but doesn't hype anything. On kick, for example, it doesn't gi...

Re: Does anyone use overheads?

As per the other thread, I quite like having the "overheads" down at or below cymbal height, and positioning them for the best overall drum sound/ balance/ stereo spread, which often means one in front and one on the floor tom side. Even so when it comes to mix time, quite often I start with good in...

Re: Noob: Routing a Mixer w/Converters

I'm also looking at picking up a mixer so I can mix with faders, use outboard EQ, etc. Specifically, something 24 or 32 tracks. ... Do most people end up bussing down to just a stereo out from the mixer, and print only the stereo mix into the DAW? Or, is it more typical to try and route each indivi...

Re: How high do you like your overheads (and why)?

Yes, I do like the 4050s, very good mics for surprisingly cheap second hand prices. There are times when I prefer them to 414s. On the other hand, they're not perfect - I think they tend to emphasise low mid resonances (not great for some acoustic guitars), and they're definitely light across the up...

Re: How high do you like your overheads (and why)?

Sure, this is the nearest I can find to being able to see both mics and the kit; https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/806/40913033582_b05f0b018a_c.jpg From memory, I think both mic stands got moved in about 15cm from what you can see there. The front at4050 ended up slightly lower because the edge-wash fro...

Re: MS drums with mono OH - variants?

4038 as mono OH about 3ft above snare YIKES. Be careful with that... they are not made for strong transients like snares. I think it'd be fine - Ribbons are fine with high SPLs, what they don't like are gusts of air (that's what'll blow them next to a kick drum, for example, or in front of a vocali...

Re: How high do you like your overheads (and why)?

If they're overhead at all, I tend to prefer them not too high - maybe just below the height of my chin when I'm standing up so only really just high enough to avoid being in the phasey edge-wash of any of the cymbals and in some kind of ORTF (though usually not pointing as far apart as ORTF, I do i...
