Not said often enough...you actually have a pretty nice setup - For what you're doing, I wouldn't recommend spending any money, just getting lots of takes.

Re: MIDI for an idiot
I'd even go so far as to say become a Midiot!! No, that's not derogatory...it's like a Midi nerd or something, but I swear, my ability to interface DAWs to sequencers to effects boxes to etc. has sparked TONS of creativity. If it has a midi in plug on it, that translates to "can do more than you tho...

Re: Cable length
The scientific proof of why I prefer long cables over short runs doesn't exist, but I do. I have a 100' snake I use to run stuff all over the place that most of the time sits about 10' away from the preamps...but I still like going through the snake. It does sound different to me, and [gulp] I think...

Re: Alan Lomax - Recording SOUNDS OF THE SOUTH
I saw a list once that showed exactly what the gear was - I remember specifically he had two other mics: an altec lipstick and a saltshaker. Hope this helps.

Re: Studio Projects SP828--anyone see this yet?
Huh.
I'm getting a chuckle out of the fact that BB ICs are getting name recognition these days. They have beat the 5532's ass for over 10 years now, but it's just now that everyone asks for em by name. It's like when everyone discovered the military equivalent of the 12AX7...

Re: Sans amp, which one?
I've only ever had the classic - I'll agree with Tchad Blake on it though - it sounds great on everything except guitar.
Hijack - is it just me, or do most effects sound best on what they AREN'T intended for?

You're having problems with an ADAT? But that's such a stable platform! Impossible! That's like a mini disc crapping out or a DAT machine not working!

Re: Guitar sounds - different mics and placements
I like the sound of a LDC about 6" away from the grill, then an utterly squashed dynamic about 3' away (Beyer M88 through a distressor has worked well, but I'm in love with 57s again after building the Sherlock!)

Yup, exile is a great starting point for mixing. Cuz everything that comes off my desk sounds like it was recorded over a year in France by Andy Johns on the RSM Helios desk. Yup.

Re: anyone building the sherlock?
I seriously doubt you have a bad transformer - what you're describing sounds exactly like a grounding scheme issue. First check that all of your grounds are indeed connected with no cold joints, including the DC ground. You shouldn't need a lug - mine was hum free.

For $50, you need justification?

Re: Home Studio Construction - getting wires through walls
You're right when you say that you'll have leakage as soon as you make a hole - but seal it up with plaster and you'll be better off. I don't think it matters how you cut the hole or whether or not you use PVC (but that's a neat idea), as long as it's sealed afterwards, you should be okay. IMO, the ...
