Re: What Headphones are you guys using?

Ditto the SH 280 Pros. All that, and a hyped low end. Pretty affordable, too.

Re: Tube AMps: Tone and Care

Couldn't agree more: tubes last a long long time, new old stock is not hard to find, and new stock is getting better and better. Everyone's favorite fence sitter Walter Sear has a great set of articles about tube gear at

Re: No Quarter

What did you guys think of Plant's solo records after Zeppelin but before the collaboration? I liked them! I always liked Plant's stuff; I felt like the best one was his first one, and the quality went down with each new release, although I will say that his third one, Shaken and Stirred, is pretty...

Re: the mystery of the Stradivarius

according to this movie i saw, the real reason Strads sounded so great (or maybe it was just this one) was that he totally like drained the blood out of this baby who'd died, maybe it was his kid, i'm not sure, and used it as the base for the varnish. they proved it with microscopes and shit. i was...

Re: I need songs of grief...Please

Two songs I know of that are specifically about grieving a loss are Temple of the Dog's "Say Hello to Heaven" from their self-titled and Pearl Jam's "Light Years" from Binaural.

Thoughts with you,

Re: How the hell does this midi stuff work?

If all you really care about is a few synth sounds here and there, and you don't already have a keyboard, then get Native Instruments' Pro-53 software (very cheap on EvilBay, especially if it is Pro-52). You can play it with your computer keyboard, i.e. you don't have to worry about getting a piano-...

Re: Can An Otari MX5050 Slave To Something Else?

I'm contemplating using an Otari MX5050 mkIII 8 track for some analog tracks. I'd like to know if it can slave to, say, a computer To reiterate what George Walker said, tape machines can not chase computers. Tape machines are by their nature variable in their speed because it is an actual motor mov...

Re: Nilsson Schmilsson, what in the holy fuck???

I apologize, people, I just had to revisit so that I could relive. This is to albums what Paul Newman is to good looks: inhuman. I'm a guy, but I know True Beauty when I see it. Ever see Cool Hand Luke? Long Hot Summer? No? Fuck you. Most things you listen to for awhile, you go, ah, yes, it's this, ...

Re: recording/producing drums like it was 85'-help me brains

I seem to recall back in the day that you couldn't get away from the Remo Pinstripes with Dead Ringers on them for the toms. I don't know if either of those products are still made today.

Famous synth sounds of The Who

These Mellotron threads have reminded me that I've looked for but never found any good info on the synths used by The Who on Baba and Who Are You. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Re: U2 (aka Bono vs. Toto)

I always felt like the actual lyric writing was way better on Achtung Baby, which it is, if you know anything about English, but Joshua Tree just has the ability to completely tear you up if you ignore side 1 (excepting Red Hill Town). I mean, no matter what (and I really can't take much of U2) some...

Modnern wrock: what's "wrong?"

For the past few years, I've noticed that most of the music on the local "modern rock" station just sounds wrong to me, and I can't quite articulate why. I understand most modern commercial music is overcompressed to shit, but I'm talking about the actual harmonic content; to me, it just seems wrong...
