Re: Isolation with a drop ceiling: fantasy or reality

If you think your source of transmission is the ducting, your soffit idea may be enough to get some isolation. You may want to consider insulating the ducts themselves rather than adding a full-on soffit. This would help keep them from resonating and carrying sound up stairs. An HVAC contractor migh...

Don't forget about door latch holes, too. If you can, buy unbored doors and use pull handles and pushplates with either a closer or a roller catch instead of a standard door knob. Knobs make a 2 1/8" hole in the door that is impossible to make airtight ( = soundproof).

Hey Carl

My pal Jeff Elbel has a room built to Wes's plan. He has a tiny bit of info here:

He's a good guy, so contact him if you want feedback on the design.

It was great, and went off with nary a hitch. Panels were well attended, exhibitors happy with attendance, and most generally excited to have the event back in action. Odds are really good that we'll go back next summer, sometime around the full moon in June or July. Make plans early, because it's a...

$80 registration until 30 June; don't forget to sign up, and get that room lined up, too. Tape Op and Gearslutz.com have signed on as media sponsors, Vintage King is leading the charge amongst the exhibitors, and all is moving along nicely. Joel's too modest to say it, but he'll be part of an intere...

Best low-budget door is to use an exterior jamb with a 1.75" solid-core door. The ext. jamb will have weather-stripping already on the top and sides, so all you need is a drop-down sweep for the bottom. If you can get away with it (ie don't need a lock), have it not drilled for a knob and use a roll...

Small place but great room and monitoring setup, and killer views of the pine forest from the live room. About an hour from central Denver.

(full disclosure: I did a lot of carpentry on this place and Brad and Jenny are friends.)

Thanks for the suggestions, Byron. The wires are just devilishly small.

We need to have a Denver/Boulder TOMB rendezvous, don't you thinK? I've made contact with a couple of new acquaintances who we could include.

Further micro-surgery has produced the separate conductors within each 1/16" earcup cable; my problem appears to be within the drivers, not the cables. By the way: anyone have a suggestion for a fine gauge wire stripper for cable like this? There must be something easier than a No. 11 Xacto knife. F...

Sennheiser HD202 repair

Anyone tried to sort the conductors in the cable in a pair of these cheapo's? They have a separate wire from each ear cup instead of a 2 conductor with ground cable. I've got the conductors separated, but the inner signal wire and outer ground don't appear to have anything shielding them but nylon f...

lost Do you have the money to replace the duct with a replacement made of duct board? HVAC contractors build ducts out of that material, which is similar to 703 (though not as dense); maybe you could have one made to replace the existing one, and it would be self-damping. Duct board might work as a ...
