Re: How important is it to mic the bottom of a snare?
i mic it 100% of the time and mix maybe about 10% into the snare sound but without it i feel like some sizzle is missing, an its fun to be able to just send the under side to a reverb send. also if doing some drum replacement (shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) sometimes the bottom mic has noticeably less bleed for ...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
here's a shot of a recent session. I think this was an Audix D6 (but I've been using a Telefunken M82 lately) peeking into the port, sE X1 D outside the front head about 4" away and toward the top, point down slightly to avoid some cymbal bleed. DIY subkick about 3-4" from front head, but I don't a...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
my fav kick mic is a Soundelux/Bock U195 you guys and gals using the LDCs like the u47 variants and such. what positioning are you using? with the dynamics im typically peeking the mic right inside the port of the kick if it has one. is this the same starting position for the condensers or are you ...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
I like the Senn E602II. It's is scooped, but not anymore than I would do on mixdown - I sometimes add a little narrow 90 or so, never have to cut it. But I must add, I like kick under the bass ... ive tried a friends e602, it wasnt bad at all but i heard it as in the same boat with the beta52 and t...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
I personally love an re20 or sm7 for most natural sounding to my ears kick. Unfortunately my re20 has been in need of maintenance for a while and I dont currently own an sm7 myself. I tend to use my Senn 421 the most now. It's got a little exaggeration going on but nothing like the beta52 that my o...

unhyped kick drum mic
ive been living in beta 52 land for too long. not really feeling the scooped mid, 5K boost aggressive modern rock metal sound any more. i believe the d112 also falls into this category as well. so i guess im looking for first hand experience with flatter kick mics.

Re: dark condensers on the cheap for high SPLs
yeah, the 012s are my go to for batter head! have wanted a ksm137 for a while, might be time to pull the trigger. used to use 4050s on bottom tom duties, funny enough, but found them to be a little thin. curious about a stock oktava 219/319. i only have the Joly modded 219, which is pretty damn goo...

another vote for a 319 or an mk 012. both great for this position and also excel at many other jobs.

Re: How long does it take you to mix?
I'm also about 3-4 hours for rock mixes. Lately I've been trying something where I put up three or four static mixes really quickly like 15-20 mins each. Then I'll pick my favorite parts from each and make a composite. After that I may do some automation but frequently switching between mixes for d...

How long does it take you to mix?
Nothin crazy, not 1000 tracks, not including editing and clean up. I work with mostly rock/ punk/ metal bands and I would say when all is said and done about 2-3 hours per song. I work a hybrid set up. Cubase our into a console and racks of outboard. All automation in the box. I’m just curious about...
