I've not had the fortune to record at 1979, but I've visited a few times, and it really is a great space. Just being able to stretch out in these days of smaller and smaller studios is a great asset. Plus Chris and staff are great guys. Any dude(paging Bert....) that can grow a 'stache like that at ...

The brown truck just delivered a brand new 16 track headstack for my 2" JH16 tape machine. Fresh from Mr. John French's collection. Absolutely no wear, 100% condition report. I'm so psyched I can't think straight....I never thought I'd get a 16 track stack, let alone one that will last me till I'm 5...

Man, don't apologize, enjoy! MCI's can be great, but that Otari is nothing to sneeze at. Especially if you got it at a great price. Use that thing with your Ampex and get busy! There's always consoles available down the road once you get your ears attuned to what you want to hear. But definitely don...

Made it back today around 3:30. I had a great time all around. It was great to meet Tony and Mark Rubel, and to see Tony and Chris Mara laying it down on oxide in the college's studio A. I'm without words to describe how amazing it was to look ahead and see Mr. Phil Ramone talking about his past, an...

A very smart friend of mine, when we first talked- asked me this: Q: What is a boat? (His)A: A hole in the water you throw money into. Q: What is a recording studio? (His)A: A place you store your boats. But, I can't say much. I've acquired more major pieces of equipment in the past year, than I hav...

I will see you folks there this weekend! It'll be great to meet up with you, Tony. I was just telling a friend about how you spent the time talking me thru my decision of getting a 2" machine. Very cool times. And...I have a big surprise to share with everyone... Till then! And Artifex, shoot me a p...

I'm thinking of drinking the bova kool-aide, and getting a bova ball(or a stereo pair....). So if you don't mind my derailing this thread, what can I expect with a pair of these things on overhead duties? Originally I just wanted a mono room mic that would bring some real air into my small tracking ...

I want to say Chris Garges here had one a while back- maybe ask him what he thinks. As far as the ATB, there's many threads about em, some dissing construction issues and others praising sound. Personally I wouldn't dig one because it's not fully modular, but then again, it's new- for now anyhow. I'...

I talked to Mike Miller as well before the purchase of my 528. Super kind and generous guy! And, yeah- what he says about being committed is pretty much true. It's not that I spend more time working on my gear than recording, but things do pop up, and you have to act on it or you are down to 21 chan...

I really hope wherever I end up next, I can build an elevated control room. Kind of a clubhouse control room, so I can have a window and look down and out into the live room, but not be face to face, fishbowl-style like I am now. Even a few feet up from the live floor would be good. Bottom of the wi...

Awesome. I'm certainly not abandoning stereo mixing by any means, but I do enjoy the challenge of making things deep without the 'crutch' that pan knobs can sometimes give us. I realize I can do this without some crazy headstack, just to be clear. I'm just nuts and like torturing myself with technol...

I've owned my MCI 528B for just under 3 months now, so I'll add what I can. Firstly, I really like the thing. Not because it's got a vintage mystique, but because the thing sounds really good. It's built turbo heavy duty, and is very serviceable(Like most MCI gear). In the time I have had the thing,...
