Studio closing in Portland, OR - anyone interested in taking over the space?

Hey all, I'm Josh Powell, owner/operator/engineer at The Map Room recording studio in Portland, OR. We will be closing up shop in November this year. We'd love to see the space continue as a studio. Anyone have any interest in taking over the space? Acoustic treatment and cabling etc available at a ...

Good musings here for sure. I agree making musicians comfortable is important.... except sometimes making musicians uncomfortable works better. :-) Don't mean to be contrarian but every session & group of musicians is different. Part of the job of a good engineer or producer is to adapt the flow of...

Another kind o feedback loop (how to make a great recording)

Let's look at what happens in a room when musicians are making a recording. Specifically I want to examine some of the factors that contribute to a great performance, and by extension, a great recording. First, what is a great recording? There are plenty of ways of quantifying this, but what I alway...

FS: Portland, OR: Otari MTR-90 mk II 24 track tape machine

We at The Map Room are selling our Otari MTR-90 mk II 24 track. It's in great shape and has been used on sessions as recently as a week ago. The only known issue is that ch 4 does not erase. We have not tried to chase the problem down since 23 tracks seems to always be enough. Alan Garren has been t...

FS: ADAM A7 monitor pair and Shure KSM141 stereo pair

I am the original owner of this pair of ADAM A7 monitors. They are about 3 -1/2 years old with no issues. They are in perfect cosmetic and working condition. I am selling them because I bought a pair of ADAM s2a monitors. I prefer a local sale, but I do have all the original packaging with the heavy...

I know its been said, but tuning the kit properly is hugely important. Have a good drum tech come by at the beginning of the session and tune up the drums for the kind of sounds you want to hear. That will get you far in your quest for a good drum sound.

Yeah, the M3 that resides at my studio was quite a bit of work to get running well. That's because at some point it was moved carelessly and the tonewheels were nudged out of position, some wires were broken too, but now its working great. I put money into new tubes and that's about it, so it was re...

Price dropped on both units. I will sell one unit, but not both. Both are now less than the cost of parts. Either one is a great deal! I might do eBay soon if no one bites.

Since I posted this I have put the second two channels of JLM Dual 99v in a rackmount case with Altran C2870 output transformers (I believe these transformers were designed for Walter Sear). I would be willing to sell these instead of the pair described in the previous post. I can let these go for l...

JLM Dual 99v in rack case *price drop*

I bought this JLM Dual 99v about 4 years ago from JLM. Its the "everything kit" from JLM. Exact same thing as pictured here . It has a JLM screenprinted rackmount case, DIs on each channel, OEP input transformers, JLM trifilar wound output transformers, and two 99v gain stages per channel running on...

I just spent a couple minutes checking it out. Seems like it could be cool...

I finally found something I'd worked on. And they list me as a Joseph Powell. This is a different person. My name is Josh Powell. Oh well.
