At the beginning of the first Page segment when he's playing through "Ramble On", my wife gets a boner every time.

Finding recording studio for a class in Hollywood CA?

I have an opportunity to set up and teach an intro to recording course at a small college in Los Angeles next fall. It would be an 12-week elective class with modest goals (general concepts, digital recording, basic mics, get-to-know-you effects etc), and probably 2-10 students in the (ahem) mix. I ...

The Guitar Handbook by Denyer has pretty good basic theory for guitarists (as well as other info you may be familiar with already), and I see it on the shelf in bookstores regularly. If you're coming to grips with chord and scale names and formulas, you might not need heavy-duty "common practice" cl...

And of course there's this:

Phat fresh Simmons beats! Though this version seems to have the drum break edited out.

They sure liked that "POOOOSSHHH" waterfall synth sound when they hit a chorus, didn't they?

Getting my Spirit FX8 board modded in Seattle?

Hey, all - I'm very happy with my FX8, it's perfect for what I'm doing. But what I absolutely hate Hate HATE is the chintzy little AC power connector. If it isn't plugged in in just that One Particular Way, the on-board effects don't work and usually I get a low-level hum, too. Of course wiggling th...

Thanks for the reply - good to know, I'll keep the ol' x-acto knife handy! It also seemed to me that I'll be connecting the output jack and the mic capsule and then pushing the capsule UP through the rubber sleeve (appropriately trimmed after test-fitting), right? Or perhaps the better way to go wou...

That DIY omni project - advice?

About to get the Panasonic-omni-in-a-Neutrik-jack project going this weekend, and while my soldering chops are fine for guitar pickups and pots, I am a little intimidated by the microphone capsule - the connections on that are so darn tiny! Seems like it would be all too easy to accidentally get som...

*takes thread onstage with Yes in front of skeptical UK crowds* I like the idea of the space being part of the recording, be it my basement or inside a stone castle with fancy gear. I have the amp a couple feet off the floor in the center of the room, and we've done no deadening aside from the carpe...

Follow-up single... er, mp3: "The iPod Killed the Album Star" (as seen on TOMB!) Michael: my favorite sound was about two feet away. Closer was useful too, and had a more immediate "right there" sound. Spent some time with a 57 yesterday and found out that sweet spots DO exist and an inch really CAN...

Adventures in Modern Recording (or, Learning to Mic an Amp)

After reading Justin Foley's post over in the "modeling vs. micing" thread, I did some experimenting with my amp and some mics. I'm a home recording "enthusiast" and while I don't have a million hours logged behind the board yet, I do have a good ear and know what I want to hear. I've noticed from t...

I love a nice clean shave, and I find that it usually goes better when I have a couple days of scruff to work with. The electric shaver gets me by about half the time. Oh, and I've had a great time panning the reverb opposite the dry signal since being reminded about it in a post last week. Next exp...

Aha! Any recommendations? I assume these are keyboardless midi controllers that basically provide a control-panel? Just took a look on the 'Bay and find things like the Doepfer Pocket Control and Behringer BCN44, M-Audio Trigger Finger... that kind of stuff? And the Phat Boy looks like it could give...

Thanks for all the thoughts and opinions. I got a kick out of that Mark Snow crack! Internal samples vs. tweaky does seem to be the ol' workstation vs. analog knobs issue. And it's sure fun to twiddle those knobs (MicroKorg and VA style), but when I think harder about the sounds I'm actually going t...
