Re: Compresson 101

I see what's happening here. You are outgrowing your digital 8 track. Same thing happened to me, I used the 880 for recording my own music with my band, just to get ideas down. I kept wanting to get the recordings to sound better and better... 5 years later I have a small modest studio where I work...

Re: Compresson 101

Last one for tonight: Since I am pushing forward with the VS (for now), I need this question in particular answered: Can I use compression to "color" kicks? Or will compression only "dirty" up a standard 808-type (quick attack [see how much I've learned?] and relatively long fall-off) kick? And, of ...

"I agree with Lavahead. I used to use the ART Tube MP... I've have a UREI 1176" [That blurb above is supposed to be quote. But in my haste to reply, I cut out the quote---ow, man! There's a quote button on tne reply form!] "I agree with Lavahead. I used to use the ART Tube MP... I've have a UREI 117...

Re: Compresson 101

Okay. But what if there is noticeable improvement in my track? Are you all saying the compressor is worthless, or just that even at its best, it doesn't touch an outboard piece--even a cheapy--on that pieces worst day? 'Cause I can comprehend that lesson; Yugo's to Cadi's and all. Otherwise, I am be...

Re: Compresson 101

UPDATE: On again with my VS and my latest project (2+ yrs. in the making!). Thank you for all your help with my D-VICE and compression. It's like falling in love, all over again! Cheers, "[S]uper mix / so nice / so baad / you won't dispute the price" - Chuck D. ("MIUZIWEIGHSATON", PE - It takes a Na...

Re: what would you do?

One great thing about the self-contained units is that you never have compatibilty problems and very, very, very few crashes (I never crashed any of my recorders), since everything is in one unit. They're very stable platforms, IMHO. -mark Hello! I realize you may already be on your merry recording...

Re: Compresson 101

Thanks for the rack-mounted CDR suggestion...I think that is the way to go (it looks like it is still in production, right?) It also makes sense about the compression settings...that is why I am having a hard time hearing differences when I change the settings (a disadvantage of having preset compre...

VS840 series recording tips

Hello! I am new to this forum. However, based on the replys to my question on compression on my VS840EX, I am going to fish for more. This unit is an older unit; perhaps the late 90's, home recordists' four track. Any (and I do mean ANY) tips, short cuts, pointers, etc. that you may know or be willi...

Re: Compresson 101

Yes. It is the same. And it is driving me crazy because I want to learn the effect while also improving my project's sound (especially the kicks). I want to apply Punk's DIY approach to a much younger genre; we need it! I also have a quick related question, since you have a VS840: what is the model ...

Re: Compresson 101

Thank you!

Even though it may not seem like much of an answer, your description of your search for clues amongst your friends was significant in and of itself.

I plan to fiddle with the settings during some "me" time tomorrow.

Compresson 101

Hello :D ! I am an off again, on again home recording musician. I use a Roland VS840X 8-track recorder (records to 250MB zip). I am in love with my machine, as most of my music is drum-machine-type, and I can usually build songs to an acceptible quality level, fairly quickly. However, I recently rea...
