Looking for a studio in Portland, May 30/31

I'm looking for a studio that would let me bring a project in as a freelance engineer. The band is a jazz quartet (possibly quintet), no piano, just horns, acoustic bass and drums. An Iso booth for the bass would be great, working in Logic would be a bonus for me because that's my DAW of choice, and...

Good to read it came out the way the artist wanted it. Remember, if the albums is NOT a drummer's, then WHY should the drums be front and center? They need to be in their place, BEHIND the stars of the show. Cheers Yeah, I totally get that. Changing the balance of the tenor mics actually made the d...

I sent a new round of mixes to the client, and he signed off on them, and actually sounded as if he liked them! What I did: Changed the blend of the U87 and the ribbon mic to 50/50, had been about 70/30 U87. This added some more bottom to the tenor. There's a lot of drum bleed in the ribbon channel,...

Turn up the heat and feed him lots of doughnuts. This is the best answer. Love it! Hey, thanks for all the input. I should have mentioned that re-tracking is not an option at this point, though I'll take some of the suggestions into our future sessions. We actually did some pretty extensive pre-pro...

Jazz tenor player wants to sound "warmer and rounder&qu

I'm working with a great post-Coltrane jazz tenor sax player. He gets a terrific tone, to my ears at least, but never seems satisfied with his recorded sound. In the last round of mix revisions, he asked to make his horn sound "warmer and rounder." In the past, when I've pushed him to clarify his te...

I just picked up the UAD version a few weeks ago, and it's really impressing me. The first place I used it was on a fingerstyle guitarist in open C tuning, on a track that was just guitar and percussion. The VOG really filled out the low end on the guitar, but in a way that still sounded natural.

Alessis Monitor 2's powered by an 80's vintage Hafler amp. I've had these speakers for about 15 years, and have gotten pretty accustomed to them. My mixes seem to translate pretty well, so I'm not in any rush to replace them. Am considering adding a pair of Avantones, though.

My SM7b is my go-to mic for trumpet or trombone. Never really used it on a sax, usually because I'm generally recording sax at the same time as trumpet or bone, as part of a section. I've seen a lot of RE20's used on horns as well.

Awww, that's so cute! I totally sympathize with Daisy, the stuff we gotta do to get the drummer to ease up on his cymbals...

Once, playing a back yard party with a punk band, the resident dog came on "stage" and took a huge, stinky dump during our set. Thinking back, we probably were that bad.

Missed this thread! Last Thursday, the 4th, was the first session for a possible CD by a latin band I've been playing with for about a year and a half. It's 3 percussionists who rotate between congas, bongos, timbales, cajon, shekere, etc, bass, guitar, and keys (me). Our bandleader, one of the perc...

A studio I've done a number of projects in lately has a pair each of Audix D2's D4's. Really liking them on toms quite a bit. One project I did there has, IMHO, the best tom sound I've ever captured. The fact that it was a great drummer on a well-tuned kit with new heads didn't hurt, but the Audixi ...

I used the verbs in my cheap Lexicons , LXP 1, LXP 5, & MPX100, for years after getting a computer, because non of my ITB reverbs sounded as good to me. The MPX has a plate setting that I really liked on drums, and you could probably get one for next to nothing these days.

Work 2 days a week at possibly the last used record store on the west coast. Do a lot of spoken word/audio book work at my home studio, and gig with 4 different bands. Somehow I almost manage to pay my bills every month. Just started a part time work-at-home gig for a contractor working for Google, ...
