can a DAW be noisy?
I can hardly believe this. After months of troubleshooting, I've discovered the source of a noise that's been tormenting me. It's not my mic or my pre or my cables or my electricity or cell phones or any of that stuff. It's my DAW. Listening to my mic and pre through my interface's mixer software, e...

Re: harsh frequencies? rogue resonances?
That edit at 2:32 is going to be the death of me.
Thank you so much for listening! Getting mentioned in the same sentence as The Church means I can die happy.
Not sure what to make of everyone saying the bass is totally fine. But maybe I'll leave this one alone for now.
Thanks again.

Re: harsh frequencies? rogue resonances?
You are all brilliant and wonderful. I'm going through your suggestions one by one. One note: I sprung for Soothe specifically for this problem (and de-essing). So far, I'm not really that blown away. Plus, it just destroys my CPU. Is there anywhere I can post a mix? Does that still happen on here? ...

Re: harsh frequencies? rogue resonances?
Let me know how it goes. I'm too afraid to get this mix anywhere near my car at this point. Godspeed! Dealing with this exact thing right now (literally). In my case it's 2 things - poorly set up instrument & very sloppy right hand technique. I did what I could, including editing together better tak...

Re: harsh frequencies? rogue resonances?
Thank you all for the great advice. Things I've tried so far: compression, EQ, re-amping, distortion (inserted and parallel), and a bit of automation. The simple suggestion about headphones turned out to be instructive: the part sounds much more even in cans than through my monitors. My room sucks. ...

harsh frequencies? rogue resonances?
I'm mixing a song and getting close to (what I hope to be) the end of the process. Which is about the time I notice: some notes in the bass line really jump out, while some recede to the point of being almost inaudible. What is this? What did I do wrong? How does one avoid or repair this? How come i...

Re: How to record the Flying Burrito Brothers
If those vox were tracked live, this record is a miracle. Maybe it is anyway.

Nothing to say the vocals are live on either record though. They may have been an overdub

You guys saying I should reach out to people who worked on it? Oddly enough that never occurred to me. But...yeah why not?!

Re: Audio Test Kitchen/Spotify examples?
Good idea. I’m in Seattle, so you’d think, right? For sure, totally get that. But In the same way that I’ve learned to tell Martins from a Gibson acoustic in certain recordings, I’d love to learn how to identify the sound of certain mics or preamps or compressors or what have you…… I don't know the ...

Re: How to record the Flying Burrito Brothers
Thanks guys. Good call on the high pass filtering. The whole sound is so intensely focused on high mids. Yet it never feels strident. Really a beautiful sound imo...
I’m also struck by how dynamically even the vocals are. Hard to imagine singers today being able to pull that off.

How to record the Flying Burrito Brothers
Question for you guys. If you were to try to re-create the sound of Gilded Palace of Sin, what type of gear and approach would you use? I get that the obvious answer is to get really brilliant players and musicians and singers and songwriters. My question is more focused on the type of gear and appr...

Re: Audio Test Kitchen/Spotify examples?
Right. I guess it’s not so much that I care about that song (lol). It’s more just that I’m curious to know if the gear credits they list are accurate. https://www.allmusic.com/album/american-boy-mw0000583392/credits Those are the only people I can see involved in this record. You could contact the M...
