keeping your stems clean?
This is probably "Routing 101," but I must ask. You are kind people and hopefully will not flay me. I've been working on my mix skillz. (Why a z? I don't know.) I've got a song that's up to like 86 tracks in Ableton Live. I've started stemming stuff out to free up CPU space. When I "print" the stems...

Re: simple level control device?
You know what I hate? When someone posts a question and then a bunch of folks are nice enough to answer and then the jerk who asked the question never follows up. That jerk would be me. Anyway, thanks for all the intel! Yeah, the interface has balanced insert points, so I'm hoping for a hardware thi...

Re: Shawn Everett techniques
Oh wow. Yeah, of course. Makes sense. Not sure why routing has always been so tricky for me. Some circuitry is missing in my brain. This whole convo has me considering Pro Tools. I'm starting to get the sense Ableton Live isn't exactly ideal for mixing. Thanks, this all makes sense. I'm scratching m...

Re: Shawn Everett techniques
Thanks, this all makes sense. I'm scratching my head a bit trying to figure out how to set up a buss that skips the processing on my master buss. I'm sure there's a way. Now, I don't use PT. I use Ableton Live, and maybe that's the trouble. But I can't for the life of me figure out how he's putting ...

Re: Shawn Everett techniques
Funny, I just downloaded the demo of that plug this morning. Looking forward to trying it out. It seems complicated to me, but then again so does everything these days... I don't know about his technique but I really like this REFERENCE plugin, which can do what you describe and has several other us...

Shawn Everett techniques
Greetings! I've been really deep into studying everything Shawn Everett has ever recorded, said, or done lately. (Yup, pretty obsessive—but once I learned everything about every recording Tchad Blake ever made, I had to find a new hobby. Kidding. Sort of.) Anyway, I have a specific question on the w...

Re: simple level control device?
Make my own you say? How would I go about that?

Naturally you could also make your own for a couple of bucks. It's basically a guitar volume pot.

simple level control device?
This is a simple question but maybe hard to explain... In Andy Hong's 2014 review of the Audient id22 (Issue 104), he mentions inserting a "level control" into a channel strip so that you can overdrive the preamp without clipping your DAW. (See, that was a weird explanation. Did it even make sense?)...

Re: Josephson C705 + Lauten Atlantis
You wrote that?! I love that review. I think I literally laughed out loud when I read it the first time. Well done! That mic maker definitely has my attention. And the tube mic is reasonably enough priced that I might add it to my collection on a whim. Thanks for chiming in; I'd forgotten about that...

Re: 1073 SPX pre versus Shelford Channel pre?
Thanks for the thought-provoking reply. In my case, the psychosomatic part is maybe more powerful than the actual sonic part. And I'm ok with that. I'm ok knowing that I'm chasing an experience and a feeling as much as a sound. If my songs and my process feel more valid and legitimate because I'm re...

Re: 1073 SPX pre versus Shelford Channel pre?
Yeah man, totally hear you on all of this. I think part of what I'm after is the experience you're having, where you hear playback and just can't believe what's happening. I just want to know what that feels like. I suppose that means my priorities are weird... Oh... and just something that I think ...

Re: 1073 SPX pre versus Shelford Channel pre?
I agree with you: compression might be a nicer add if I had to choose one. (Which is another way of saying, I'm less likely to make regrettable and intractable mistakes with compression than with EQ.) After all of this useful and reasonable input, I think I'm about to make the financially unsound de...

Re: Josephson C705 + Lauten Atlantis
I did indeed spend time with both of those reviews. Andy's review of the Lauten was pretty hard to ignore! I have the Josephson on order, but if it doesn't work out, I'll definitely return it and try the Lauten. To answer your question, they are the two mics I narrowed down to (after researching and...

Josephson C705 + Lauten Atlantis
Does anyone out there have experience with both of these mics? I'm curious to hear some "compare and contrast" thoughts. I've read every review I can find, so I'm familiar with the basics (Lauten has crazy versatility with different modes, Josephson is a less expensive take on super high-end Josephs...

Re: 1073 SPX pre versus Shelford Channel pre?
Oh yeah, I've been there for sure. But in this particular case, that's not the issue; I'm in the middle of mixing a song that I'm really happy with, and I've been using the 1073 quite a bit, have gotten some really nice results with it. (One thing it did that I loved: I ran in-the-box kick and snare...
