FS, Seattle, Neve + Josephson

Hey all, I'm selling my AMS Neve 1073 SPX and Josephson C705. I'm a little unsettled on prices because I'm having trouble finding any used examples of these items out there. I'd prefer to sell locally because I don't even want to think about the headache of shipping! That said, if you're in, say, Po...

Re: "harsh frequencies"

Hey, thanks for saying that. I'm pretty much always glad I asked on this forum. I feel like a bit of an idiot sometimes, but that's ok. I don't know how to get any better if I can't ask questions of those who are better at it than I am. I've always liked the idea of being an apprentice at something....

Re: "harsh frequencies"

My room sucks. No way around it. Every time I get out to my car, it's anyone's guess on how things will sound. Especially the balance of low end stuff. The frequency analyzer has been helping me a lot. I've also been using a plug-in to compare my frequency picture to that of a reference track. Thank...

Re: "harsh frequencies"

I guess all of the above. I'd been working on a mix for a long time. Brought it out to my car and realized it's almost unlistenable because of super harsh stuff around 10K. On another mix, I was almost clipping the master bus even though the mix wasn't all that loud. Turns out I had an insane build ...

"harsh frequencies"

I've been afraid to ask this one, but here goes. How does one find "harsh frequencies"? If I create a big spike in Pro-Q3 and comb it up and down, every single freaking frequency sounds bad. Yet I know there are some I should deliberately notch out to come up with a much better mix. I've spent so mu...

Re: Go-to plug-ins for adding gain

OK, so, yeah...point taken on all of these. I guess what I was getting at goes back to a Shawn Everett thing I was reading. He was going through his extensive master bus setup, and he wasn't really adding gain to the mix with any of those plugins— until he got to one (UAD Oxford Limiter), and he spe...

Re: can a DAW be noisy?

Sorry for the pause, wife and I had a baby... The mfg insists that using the insert return as a clean line input is totally cool. Nonetheless, I tried the mic input and got same results. Yes to #1. I usually record through an external pre, which I then run into the Audient via its line input (actual...

Constant or random?

Static like white noise, or like crinkle crackles™?

Go-to plug-ins for adding gain

Not a loudness wars question. Simply wondering, if you gain stage conservatively and wind up with a quiet mix, what plugins do you trust to add some gain? I’m reluctant to slap on a compressor and crank the output gain. Curious how you all approach this.

Re: 16 more channels of analog compression

You want the RNC. I say this because I used to be you. So trust me. (But seriously, RNC is well made, reliable, more versatile than ppl give it credit for. Can do transparent and can do crunchy vibey crushed stuff. And doesn't require any ebay scouring.) Man, I miss my Alesis HD24. But...I have no i...

Re: can a DAW be noisy?

Your thought process is what I went through when shopping for interfaces. It was important to me that I could run a balanced signal out of an external pre into the interface with no coloration from the interface mic preamps. Which is another way of saying, yes, I'm running TRS and/or XLR -- but alwa...

Re: can a DAW be noisy?

Sounds about right. For me, this noise would literally start the second the Ableton Live logo pops up on my screen -- like, as Ableton Live begins booting up. Which is why, at first, I believed the problem was with Ableton rather than the interface. I had a weird thing happen the other day where Qob...

Re: can a DAW be noisy?

Yes to #1. I usually record through an external pre, which I then run into the Audient via its line input (actually a return, but same thing). No to #2. Since I using a line-in, no need to gain up the channel on the Audient. Is there anything plugged into the inputs? Are the input gain knobs all the...

Re: can a DAW be noisy?

Hey friends. 1. My DAW is Ableton Live 11 Suite, running on a fairly healthy Macbook Pro. 2. My interface is an Audient iD44, which is AC powered but connects to computer via USB. 3. I don't see how it could be a plugin since I get the noise even with no plugins instantiated. 4. Nick, I think you're...
