Re: Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing

The input gain is active on the line inputs too assuming, just for clarity, that mic = the XLR inputs on a given channel and line = the 1/4 'line in' inputs. I started initially doing exactly what Trodden and Nick suggested: left the input gain alone and worked just with the faders. Then I saw some ...

Re: Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing

Ahem, I'm using a *cough* behringer xenyx. Thanks for your reply too. Always nice to hear something confirmed by second opinion! I had been doing this at first but felt that there was a level drop going from the 238 to the mixer. There might be some other issue at play that I don't feel like investi...

Re: Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing

Thank for your reply. Yes, I try and keep a good signal-to-noise ratio when tracking ( most of the time :S). I confess I'm not 100% sure about setting the tape machine to unity. I should have been clear and say im using a tascam 238 cassette 8-track. Can this be done easily a machine like that? Othe...

Very basic question regarding Input gain & Fader while mixing

Hi everyone, This is a bit of a simpleton question but what's good practice for balancing levels coming in from tape to a mixer during playback and mixing. I've never approached this in anything like a coherent manner. Say I've got 8 tracks comign in with various levels am I setting my gain on each ...

Re: Getting motivated on your own music recording projects.

things going really bad? Record absolute carnage. Love this. I take this approach when playing guitar all the time. If I don't have anything good to play I just play the worst nonsense imaginable and it always makes me laugh and usually leads to something useful. It’s awesome, right? I take an old ...

Re: Getting motivated on your own music recording projects.

Hello! Some things that helped me with low motivation. No silver bullet, of course, although I think trying to be zen about not feeling it on a particular day also helps. On those days I just noodle around on my guitar and try not give myself a hard time about it (with varying degrees of success). A...

Re: Any Scotland based people around?

Well, that's no good. Just to be clear, incase I came off insensitive, it was meant as a lamentation.

Thanks for the reply, bud.

Any Scotland based people around?

This section seems to be 95% RIP threads - don't know what that says about our current scene- so apologies if I'm not posting in the right place.

Just wondered if there is anyone from Edinburgh/Glasgow and environs who fancies playing and recording some music?

Re: Potentially groan inducing Tascam 424 as mixer question.

Couldn't get that link to work because I'm in the UK but found some clips on youtube. I like it! Those are some nice recordings. Yeah, I enjoy playing around with these machines. Find them quite inspiring despite their quite obvious limitations but you can also eke out surprising results with them. ...

Re: Potentially groan inducing Tascam 424 as mixer question.

It is indeed a little noisy but it'll do for now.

Yeah, it looks fun. Looking forward to recording with it. Thanks!

Cheers!

Re: Potentially groan inducing Tascam 424 as mixer question.

Thanks for your reply! My plan for the moment- ok, it's me alright I admit it!- is to record directly to the tape from my preamp, mono track by track, then run the outputs into the portastudio for monitoring. There are 6 mono inputs and 7/8 stereo so I expect this process to be not the most fun but ...

Potentially groan inducing Tascam 424 as mixer question.

Let's say a guy-no names- just aquired a Tascam 238 but he's exhausted his funds for a mixer for the moment. Let's say this same guy has his beloved Tascam 424 around and he only records a channel at a time ( 2 max). Could he, in the (hopefully very) short term, use the 424 mixer to record into the ...
