Re: Hot tips for recording a mandolin?

Eventide Physion II or Split EQ will allow you to cleanly separate the transients from the tones. For mandolin, I'd choose Split EQ.
Take the transients down a bit and compress the tones.

Re: Best Mics for Recording Acoustic Guitar?

I found a horrible sounding Rogue acoustic guitar at the thrift store for $20. It sounded thin, yet harsh. I put new strings on it - X-light D'Addario, did a bit of set up work and then I aimed an old AKG D310 dynamic mic from the middle of the neck towards the sound hole. No need for an HPF, there...

Re: DI bass and guitar

For bass, I use a Tech 21 Q-Strip DI with attenuation on the low mids at 320 cps. I may or may not boost the other 3 frequencies depending. Once it's tracked, there are a variety of tricks I may use. I'm just getting into Eventides Physion and Split EQ, which allow separation of the transient and th...

Re: Can you recommend a tiny USB mixer?

Take a look at the SSL 2 and the SSL 2+. I have no affiliation, I paid for mine and I use it often. I have the 2+, which adds another headphone amp and MIDI connections plus another set of outputs. Either of them will do what you need and they do sound great. Here's a review. https://www.musicradar....

Re: "On kicks with different mics like ya do"

I'm using a Shure KSM8, it's a great mic. Cardioid pattern is as close to perfect in terms of frequency consistency as you'll find. It is a dynamic mic with a passive diaphragm at the other end of a chamber of some sort. The proximity effect is more like an omni, it doesn't get boomy when you get cl...

Re: Mic Parts S-12 and T-12 Mics

Replying to Mustang... All three of the Mic Parts mics I've built seem to work fine with anything I plug them into. They don't require another transformer in the mic pre. Very nice mics and fun to build. I have no affiliation but I am a fan. Bang for the buck. The T-67 kit was not cheap, almost $500...

Re: Best Mics for Recording Acoustic Guitar?

original poster went spammy and got deleted... Still a good topic, we can proceed, no? I've used all sorts of things and not all of them for the same reason. Here's one that worked in a mix and is very different than everything else that is posted. I found a horrible sounding Rogue acoustic guitar ...

Re: Curiosity about 1/2" 16-tracks w/ RCA inputs

Long ago and far away I recorded a project on a 16 track 1/2" Tascam. A friend had a complete and decent studio space, I traded a week in there for setting up his guitars. Before negotiating a payment/barter, take a good listen to the results of your friend's recordings. They don't sound that great ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

SSL 2+ interface. So far, I like everything about it. The preamps are very nice, the dual headphone outs are handy, it's laid out well and easy to use. USB Class Compliant, no software needed to use it on a Mac. Simple switch for Stereo/Mono, a knob to mix input with USB output, separate 48v switche...

I don't have the FEThead or Cloudlifter I do have a pair of these and think they is the tease's knees: https://www.cathedralpipes.site/the-durham-mkii-mic-booster-preamp-p-208.html I have a Cloudlifter (pawn shop bargain) and a Cathedral Pipes. They don't sound much different at all, both are great...

Re: Opinions on Aux Channel Distortion (Was Plasma Pedal)

Tech 21 Double Drive, that will give you both even order harmonics and odd order harmonics. 3 band eq. At lower distortion levels it's pretty quiet, especially if you use a 9v battery. Much less gnarly than a RAT. No longer made but I got mine (a 3x MOD version) on Fleabay for about $100. They are o...

Re: Making a drum sound without drums or samples

I did this tune with a piano bench for the kick, a blend of a cardboard box and a tin Scotch case full of bbs for the snare, and I think I tapped on some drum hardware for the hi hat. Small cheat, I think I blended a floor tom hit with a mallet for the kick, but it's mostly bench. https://snappylit...

Legend has it that Ringo played a shipping crate on Words Of Love, the only Buddy Holly song the Beatles recorded and released.

Re: Making a drum sound without drums or samples

Prehistoric dinosaur thread warning!!! I've been testing and buying plastic containers. I've got water containers in 7, 5 and 3 gallon sizes. The tone that comes out if the opening is deep and huge. I've mounted a conference mic in one of the 7 along containers. I've found some smaller containers as...

Re: Clip-On Tuners?

The only clip on tuner that's worth a damn and built not to break immediately is the TC Electronics one. I use them at home and in the studio period. The TC stuff is good kit, no doubt. Strobe tuners are more accurate, not disputing it. Disagree on the "built not to break immediately" part. I'm 6 y...
