Loopy Llama -- It's a looper VSTi. Made to emulate the Jam Man or DL-4 - but also generate a click track so it could be used with a drummer live. It is designed to work with Ableton Live or any other VST host.

The Arppe2600va and the MinimogueVA are both pretty cool and free! Plus they can do a lot more than bass.

On our last record, I used Blockfish on the bass tracks and Endorphin on a 57 room mic to squash the hell out of the drums.

Try the 57. I always use it for my vocals (whether whispered or screamed). I've tried a number of condenser mics (some quite expensive -- Neumann and the like) and I always come back to the 57. It loves my less-than-perfect voice.

Tracktion records Broadcast WAVs so everything should line up just so. Not sure about the old iBook, but Tracktion isn't a big hog. Should be OK if the hard drive can keep up.

I'm always pleasantly suprised at how good my DMP3 sounds. Not "part-the-heavens" amazing, but "get-out-of-the-way-and-let-me-record" nice. I blew an M1 MkI a while back. I got sound but it it was clipping all to hell. I think it cost like $85 to replace the cone at Full Compass.
