Re: is a figure 8 a figure 8?

Any microphone is going to have some pattern issues because of the stuff that is needed around the ribbon/diaphragm to make the microphone actually work. A ribbon will have the magnets around it, a condensor might have two back-to-back diaphragms, etc. This should really only affect higher frequenci...

Re: How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?

Speaking as the repair manager for a pro audio dealer, you really don't need to save specific boxes. Definitely try to keep boxes that will fit your gear and protect it during shipping, though.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

Remember when there would always be a suggestion for an old CAD E100? That's what I still use, though I'm a live guy and pretty much only do jazz these days. Flat down to 10Hz, add your own damn scoop. Weirdly enough the original E100 mics are now selling for real money again on eBay. In my own mic...

Re: connecting turntable to console

You want to use a PHONO PREAMP. Records are mastered with the RIAA EQ curve and requires a phono preamp that applies the reverse of the RIAA curve for "accurate" playback. Line out won't give you that. It's not subtle, either - huge EQ correction. I have a little standalone phono preamp I found onl...

You might want to at least try recording it the way they practice it. Rather than one at a time.

Re: repair 414 headbasket

As I work for a rental company, and our gear has to be solid... we sent our two 414's with the broken frame to the guy in Tennessee, aka Land Audio. It wasn't cheap, but the mics came back 100%.

Re: I have high end console

I had a younger co-worker asking about vintage Tascam mixers recently. I told him to look for a Ramsa. Tascam made some shitty prosumer gear back in the day, which really doesn't reflect well on their legacy of good tape machines.

Re: Live Off the Floor in a Small Room

Very cool!

I'd be curious what the 414 on the bass sounds like. I've generally found that a mic in the tailpiece works best if it's point up across the body instead of into the body, but that has always been with a cardioid.

Re: Headphones and comfort

My most precise, and most comfortable, headphones are a pair of Sensaphonics IEM earbuds. Custom molded to my specific ears, this is fairly common amongst professional musicians and live sound technicians. I got mine, the base model, $650 on sale. The upside is that I can wear them for an 8-hour pla...

Re: Hardware Compressors for vocals on a budget

Buy a modern digital console. There are plenty of cheap options. The built-in compressors will be plenty good enough, and they vastly improved EQ over an analog board will improve things as well. Also a digital board will make it much easier to manage different settings for different vocalists, and ...

Well dang, I think I threw away a couple of still-sealed CrO2 cassettes recently as I didn't even have a working cassette deck. But I'll go look and see if I've got something still.

Re: Waddaya's workin' on this Forf weekend?

Lots of yardwork, cleaned out the house pretty good for a BBQ party I hosted on the fourth. Finished making curtains for the room I've been fixing up downstairs, so that's done finally. Musically, getting back in touch with guitar after doing a little thing playing piano, specifically a Wurlie 200 I...

Re: Organization: shelves vs cabinets vs drawers vs hooks

For me it's all about frequency of use. On the workbench I have a "three tool" guideline, where I should really only have at most three tools laying on the bench at once, and the rest in a nearby organizer. Then the less used tools are in a chest a bit further away, and the rarely used tools are on ...
