Re: Coronavirus Health Precautions for Studios

How about a minimal vocal-chain package that includes easy Internet transfer, so people could record vocals at home?

Re: DI bass and guitar

I'll cut a board to seal the cab - thanks for that. I like having the heads on this side of the glass :) One thing to look out for on various fliptop Ampegs is that they often have some means of keeping the amp in standby if there's no speaker connected. I remember one that had a four-pin XLR to th...

Re: DI bass and guitar

The older I get the less fussy I am about bass guitar tone, so count me in the DI crowd.

And I only change strings when I break them, but I never break strings. Checkmate, markjazzbassist!

Re: Vinyl surface noise

I'd put my wager on shitty materials for a music souvenir. Or maybe the lack of whatever toxic ingredient they used in the 70's. One of the more drastic cleaning methods I've heard of is wood glue, like Titebond. It sticks to the dust but not the vinyl, you just paint on a layer and then peel it off...

Re: pan your drums out of the center

I guess I am just taking a step back and wondering why - in mixing - we are hardly ever pan the kit to the side and always orient it around dead center. I get that we want the sides to be balanced and this is a very dynamic part of most pop/rock so it's easier to balance this way... but is there ro...

Re: MXR DynaComp issue in Logic Pro X

Here's a dumb idea.

Use a noise gate in your DAW, and give it a slow attack.

Re: The Tascam 388

one last thing - after we had put it all back together as i unplugged my guitar (which i had been using as a sound source to check the problem) I noticed the needle on the VU meter went up to just below -20. Every time i held the tip of the jack onto the metalwork of the guitar the meter seemed to ...

Re: Depth of Field and Recording Levels

If you record something very low in the meters, then when you mix you'll be pushing the fader up to 0dB. So you'll end up getting your source quieter, but the noise floor will be as high as you'd have for a featured instrument. A lot of the suggestions tend to produce the effect of using high and lo...

Re: EQ in line of speaker cables?

Generally you have to design it, and then make it. And not much adjustment possible. Also the components have to be able to handle power, which means bigger heavier and more expensive. Go over to Parts Express and look at the passive crossover stuff. They have a ton of resources for this kind of thi...

Re: EQ in line of speaker cables?

Totally possible, and it's often done in passive speaker crossovers.

Bear in mind that it's cut only, no boost.

Re: looking for mic stand extender to solve 414 shockmount issues...

Could get one each of the 5/8"-27 to 3/8"-16 adapters and leave the 3/8" parts eternally connected. Would be a little longer than the adapter that you describe, but easier to find. On-Stage sells the one, and every Shure mic comes free with the other.

Re: Digitizing Analog Songs, need suggestion on small, easy no screen options

What about one of those old HHB direct to CD recorders? Seems like that would be the ticket. But you'd still have to dump it into your computer. In retrospect those things sucked. Another vote for Audacity. You'll need to trim beginning/end anyway, so why not just record and do that in the same pla...

Re: Chairs?

Chairs, that's a deep subject if you don't have a young back. I too have an old Steelcase chair, that's one. I have a couple even older Gunlocke chairs, like secretary chairs, which I've found used and had to fix up. Those chairs fit me wonderfully, cause instant pain to anybody else, and squeak lik...
