Re: dynamic mics and speaker coils?
At one point I was fooling around with sticking a tape head to the magnet in a guitar speaker. It did pick up sound but I guess it wasn't interesting enough to pursue any further. In general the real action happens deep inside the magnet, in the narrow gap where the voice coil lives.

Re: Any opinion about molded earplugs ?
I tend to think that any kind of earplugs changes things enough to make it hard to do live mixing, and I'm in the position of having increasingly sensitive hearing as I get older. So looking at like right now I want to find something with at least 15dB of reduction but no change in frequency respons...

Re: Any opinion about molded earplugs ?
Won't go for a long drive, an airplane ride, or a loud show without mine. Sensaphonics, I got them to mold the full ear (like IEMs) and I have 15dB and 25dB filters. Worth every penny and I'm on my third pair.

Re: RIP Steve Albini
Not really a fan of the music, but he definitely did things his way and was a good voice to push back against conventional wisdom.
And that he more recently was able to publicly be critical of his own past behavior speaks a great deal about his character.

Re: I'm not a piano technician
Here's an interesting detail about the current piano. Four of the strings have aluminum instead of copper wrapping. Weird, and I'd never heard of that, had to ask a piano technician friend. Aluminum is lighter than copper, and apparently it was a bit of a fad at one point to use it for transitional ...

Re: New DAW?
I've actually got a virtual Windows XP machine that lives on my main desktop, I use it to program a couple odd devices (couldn't find my old copy of Halo: Combat Evolved, sadly) and it runs great in a virtual box. The software to do so is free - https://www.virtualbox.org/ and it runs on Windows (I ...

Re: Mono Auratone - who knew??
I start mixes as often as possible on a mono auratone. By starting I mean getting the faders up and setting the relative levels. I don't get into EQ or any of the fine details but as i do much of the broad strokes as possible on the auratone. Which begs the question, did you do the tracking on more...

Re: Mono Auratone - who knew??
I always check in mono, though summed to both speakers. It's too easy to get fooled by the stereo spread. Will have to try the mono Auratone thing, now that I have them!

Re: LDC issue in Fig.8 & Omni (but fine in Cardioid)
Probably an issue with the backside, as that capsule (and the associated circuitry) is only used in non-cardioid modes. The super high impedance section, the part the capsule sees, is usually pretty hard to measure in any meaningful way. AT official repair will probably just replace assemblies until...

Re: The Pro Jr.
If you bought it used, make sure it's all working 100% before you change anything. Find somebody with a tube tester, test the tubes. Use an ESR meter to check that the caps are good.
Etc. Probably wouldn't cost much to have a good tech give it the once-over.

Re: Hotel Earth studio 1 build diary
Something I was looking at a couple years ago was a "duct booster fan", which is a fan designed to be mounted in the middle of a round air duct. Some models have quite low noise specs, and can be used with soft flex duct to really decouple the vibration.

Re: I'm not a piano technician
One of the more interesting areas in working on old pianos is voicing. Over time the parts can stiffen up, but there are great modern lubricants designed specifically for pianos - Protek CLP is kind of the standard, the WD-40 of the piano world. Oddly enough you don't want to go too crazy with this ...

Re: I'm not a piano technician
So yeah, free pianos. Easy to find, not so easy to move. Here in the Chicago suburbs it cost $275 to have the current piano moved from one house a half hour away to my house, 2-3 steps at each end. So that's the first expense, though if you've got access to a van, a ramp, and a few friends you may w...
