Re: Good place to get mics serviced?

That area around the switches in a 414 is very high impedance - getting deoxit in there may actually make things worse. Best AKG service in USA is Land Audio Service in TN. Richard Land is an AKG-trained tech and absolutely recommended. https://www.akgmicrepair.com/ Land Audio is who we use too. De...

Booked a second shot! Not exactly gear but does mean that I will be able to put microphones in front of real people again soon.
It'll be the most useful thing you have stabbed into your body all year.

Re: Is it safe to set a tape echo on its side?

I always wonder this about Tel-Ray oil-can units. I have a few of them and I'm afraid to put them on their sides for some reason. I know that I've heard a difference in effect when they're not sitting upright like they should be, as the oil moves around in the can. I happened across a video showing...

Re: Smart cable hanging solution?

At work we have big walls with shelf brackets holding hundreds of cables. We use that heavy-duty home shelving track with the double slots, and the track goes up about 12 feet in the warehouse. Down around 3-4 feet we have more industrial brackets that still fit the track, but have an angle reinforc...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

and backup #2. or maybe for inspiration. Firefly FF338. Made in China. this one needed a bit more work. sharp fret edges, buzzy A string. but got that taken care of, new strings, and intonation setup and I think it's a winner too (about $225 shipped w/tax). it does have some weird spots on the fret...

That homebrew Wurly pedal is wicked.
Thanks! It's never been as good as a real one, but that's OK because I'm not really a sustain pedal guy anyway.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Totally OT but Scodiddley, is that roadhouse/restaurant still there offa US 45 that serves breakfast omelets with 6 eggs? The one where the son had some serious legal troubles? I think named something like, "Likem's"? No idea - I've only been living in this town about 6 years. When you said "six eg...

Re: Audio & MIDI in the same snake?

Looking at the spec, the signal voltage is 3.3 volts. So that's basically line level.

A nifty new pair of column speakers. Not sure where I'm going to use them, though.

Re: Audio & MIDI in the same snake?

One unsubstantiated thing I found on an unfamiliar forum, but plausible: When I developed my MIDI Long Haul product, which drives MIDI over up to 1km of audio cable, I conducted a test with BBC Engineering at the Television Centre in London, patching that and a microphone signal together around ever...

Hadn't heard of either, great story & interview. I'm only about halfway through the magazine and this is a really stellar issue so far.

Re: policies on vax or non-vax

Totally with you, Theo. I'm not religious, but this is the most "Jesus" thing I can think of happening in my lifetime. You protect yourself by protecting others, so that the disease fizzles out and fades away. Wearing a mask, getting vaccinated, that's something you should want to do just to be a pa...

Not everybody can be vaccinated. One of my customers is allergic to something in the vaccines, and may have to retire as a performer if the country can't achieve herd immunity.

Re: policies on vax or non-vax

Whether or not you're comfortable with or without masks, if you do any kind of paid business you should at least have a clear and published policy. This is as much a customer service issue as a health issue at this point.

Re: True Systems precision8 led issues?

Tried asking the manufacturer? Might be a simple fix.

Old dbx 1066 and similar units would get meter LED ghosting after a while, and the fix was just to clean the ribbon cable connectors.
