Re: Hotel Earth studio 1 build diary
Wow, super cool! That looks like a big project, even if it isn't a "big" studio.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I didn't try to take the ISO-Puck Minis apart. Height was a consideration when I looked at some of the products. The ISO-Puck Minis were the lowest profile of the products that I looked at. So the eternal question here is whether you want your monitor rigidly attached to the Core of the Planet, or ...

Re: Size Matters!
I've seen some people stack their screens vertically to better fit the space. And probably it wouldn't be super difficult to turn a widescreen 90 degrees and tell your operating system to match that. Probably wouldn't work for older folks like me with the progressive glasses, though. Looking up at a...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?
I love those old Silvertone amps. Have you seen that new pedal that supposedly does the sound? https://jackson.audio/products/1484 Hey, that's interesting. I did rebuild a 1484 a few years ago, and it was ridiculous how many resistors (nearly all of them) had drifted quite a lot. Cheap little carbo...

Re: How Do I Test A D.I. Box?
With a PCB instead of point-to-point wiring, the weight of the transformer can cause damaged if dropped. I'd take a *very* close look at all the solder joints and especially around the transformer. Maybe even touch them all up with a little fresh solder.

Re: How Do I Test A D.I. Box?
A really simple method is the "circuit disturbance test". You plug the DI into a mic input, crank up the gain a bit (be careful of your speakers/ears, a limiter would be a good idea) and probe the signal path with a metal tool from the mic jack inwards. You should get a "pop" every time you touch th...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?
So one question might be "what kind of shape are the originals in?". I wonder if it's like those old Silvertone amps, where the really desirable sound is when enough resistors have drifted in value.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I should really try those myself. I had some of the mopad style foam blocks (but off-brand) and they were worthless. I forgot about these - they would fit perfectly where I need them too... Application dependent, of course. I was at some place where they had those Recoil Stabilizer things, and when...

Re: How Do I Test A D.I. Box?
Well, what *is* your meter exactly? Generally it would be an ohms setting, lower ranges. DC resistance isn't exactly the same as AC impedance, but it'll be in the ballpark.
For that matter, what's the make and model of the DI?

Open it up and test directly on the transformer leads?

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Another returner here! My latest acquisition is a WORKING display for my Juno G , which apparently people other than Roland are now manufacturing on their own. I have a friend doing stuff like that - last I saw he had a modern power supply for the Emulator II, some kind of memory retrofit for a lot...

Re: monitors
Interesting... those Pendragons look like a project a YouTuber was doing recently. I must admit I figured that even though he was pretty realistic about design stuff I thought it looked ridiculous. But using those drivers for mids makes a lot more sense.

Re: Saturation Tools and Tricks
Just using the stock plugins in Reaper myself, but... I do like the "Waveshaping distortion" plugin. A lot of my stuff the past couple of years has been mixing together phone vocals (ie recorded remotely direct to a phone mic), and that tends to help a lot. Now that I've got these old Auratones to p...

Re: monitors
Because I'm a cheapskate amateur in the recording field (my paychecks come from a live sound company), I have a pair of the JBL LSR-305 (first generation). They're really pretty good, measuring fairly flat and seeming pretty predictable. Before them I had a pair of Event thingies which are now down ...
