I have heard that Ashdowns sound good, but see the shop a lot ... You know, I saw a lot come in when I worked at a repair shop too. For some reason mine has been problem free for 5 years now, and it's taken it's fair share of bumps & spills. Supposedly the English made ones (like mine) are more rel...

I've had my British-made Ashdown ABM500 EVOII for about 5 years now, and it sounds great - very musical EQ center freqs, versatile, and it works like a champ. No idea how the newer Ashdowns are... last I heard the company wasn't doing super well.

Bill Skibbe was interviewed in "Behind the Gear" in issue #44. The Red Stripe is more or less patterned after an LA-2A, but there are a few modifications. Here's what the article said: TapeOp: Are there any differences between the Universal Audio and the Skibbe? BS: Mainly in the transformers and th...

These threads are hilarious. I love how all of Jeff's groundbreaking music-industry-saving proposals basically amount to doing business the exact same way it was done 25 years ago. It's a bit like saying "I know how to fix the .mp3 sound quality issue! We'll record everything to wax cylinders!" You ...

Synthcart!

Accept no substitutions. Course you'll need an old Atari 2600 as well.

I guess it depends on what kind of preamps you have now, and whether or not you've used the N72s before. Unless you need all 8 pres right away, I would say just build four of the N72's right off the bat, and get some use out of them first - knock out a couple recordings, and really get to know the s...

Here in Washington State, the Liquor Control Board has decided to begin enforcing a very ambiguously written law on the books within the last few months. Basically they have decided to consider any performers on stage to be "employees" of the bar, and thus cannot consume any alcohol whilst working t...

I just got an Avatar NEO212B bass cab today, mostly due to positive reviews here and everywhere else... ...I have a gig tonight, so I'll report back as to how it works out in the real world. Okay, so it sounded superfantastic. I keep the tweeter at maybe 10%, just to open the top up a tiny bit. The...

I just got an Avatar NEO212B bass cab today, mostly due to positive reviews here and everywhere else. I ordered it on Monday, and I wasn't expecting to get it until next week, but here it is, custom tolex and everything. Looks great, and it's 13 lbs. lighter than my current cab. I plugged my Ashdown...

Just like everyone else said, try before you buy. Some Mexican Fenders are butter, some are just total dogs. I worked in music retail for 6 years, and in my experience, it's about 1 in 10 MIM basses that just kick ass right out of the box. Maybe another 2 or 3 out of the 10 are firewood, with the re...

The most wanted song sounds a hell of a lot like Anita Baker's "Rapture" in parts. Classic dentist's office jam.

The least wanted song is amazing. This might have to be my new "clear the bar out at the end of the night" song.
