Re: VocAlign? or is there something that does this better?

I've used Melodyne to "create" harmonies (from the original vocal lines) and then use that so the singer can "hear" what the harmonies are supposed to be (can do a similar thing with a guitar or a keyboard). Then we track the harmony part until they hit it (and ditch the fake Melodyne harmonies). B...

Re: Tell us about your 2023 wrap-up

I've spent all of 2024 in my new role of 24/7 caretaker for my elderly dad. He's at home, in hospice. I knew I'd have to be here, but was still surprised that January 1st was the day I'd move back in with my dad. Hospice, that's tough. :( We're helping our dad move into an "independent living" plac...

Re: Tell us about your 2023 wrap-up

2023? That was years ago! I've spent all of 2024 in my new role of 24/7 caretaker for my elderly dad. He's at home, in hospice. I knew I'd have to be here, but was still surprised that January 1st was the day I'd move back in with my dad. 2023 wasn't too bad, all considered. I mastered my "career bo...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Micromoog! This is the third one I've owned. When I had my second one, I swore I'd never sell it, but I ended up selling loads of gear when I moved back to California from Berlin. Anyway, I've just always had such a fondness for this little synth. It does squishy/gooey quite well, and is a sexy bass...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Realistic PZM for the win. I moved the piano from my dad's house into my new studio and wanted a grunt-level way of mic'ing it up. The piano is loud and bright and sits in a corner, but the PZM does a decent job of getting the good stuff and ignoring the rest. I've simply been placing it on the flat...

Re: Another Tascam 388 wonderer...

Check out Brothers Nylon or The Bakery Studio on Youtube. A lot of their stuff was tracked on 388s https://www.youtube.com/@BrothersNylon https://www.youtube.com/@TheBakeryStudio I'd seen the Bakery stuff before - that's what made me wanna get a 388! Really liked the Brothers Nylon as well. New to ...

Re: Another Tascam 388 wonderer...

I don't have a strong desire for the sound of analog tape. I'm well-settled into the realm of recording digitally. My 388 quest is/was much more about getting away from the mouse-and-screen mode of working. To this end, things are going in two directions at once. I've picked up a second Tascam Model...

Just cranked this out this morning. Bit rough and I'm not sure about the vocal 'verb, but I'll tweak the mix later...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Deltalab Effectron II. I had one as a basement teen and couldn't resist grabbing another. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought the Feedback knob allowed for actual self-feedback, but the one I have now stops short. Still, a very lovely "analog" sounding digital box...

Re: Another Tascam 388 wonderer...

I saw an article on reverb.com, something about "The Nostalgia of non-DAW Recording." My wish for a 388 or a a reel-to-reel or even a better-working 4-track is indeed part of the nostalgia zeitgeist, I suppose. Regardless of format, tape width or saturation levels, one way or other, I'm fried - like...

Re: Another Tascam 388 wonderer...

Following up on my own post... First off, Oz Fritz did a fab job with the mastering of my double album. I'd happily work with him again for mastering. Highly recommended. I'm still squinting at the Tascam 388, but pretty certain it just doesn't make enough sense for me. I'm not going to stop using L...

Re: Great records with drums low in the mix?

I've always loved how weirdly low the drums are on "Got To Get You Into My Life" from Revolver. That song had nothing but a bizarre journey overall, with the "Huh??? Seriously" early take heard on Anthology and now the new versions available on the Giles mix, loaded with "Paperback Writer" guitars.....

Re: Another Tascam 388 wonderer...

You're good for the musical economy! Ha! And not done yet - just booked Oz Fritz to master this mess of an album I'm making. Looking forward to spending that money! I hope it turns out well! Thanks! I've got a mastering engineer I've used for my last several albums whose work I've been perfectly ha...

Re: Another Tascam 388 wonderer...

The bulk of my work is still artists coming into the studio, but I supplement that with remote drumming sessions. It was nice to be able to work during lockdown, though. Glad you've been able to carry on with rock even as things shuttered around the world. I saw an uptick in paid work as well... an...
