You guys are a bunch of sick technopediphiles.
Seriously, anyone ever read any of Rudy Rucker's Software series of trashy sci-fi novels? Sex with moldies anyone?

Re: English as a Major...
Some colleges have a Business and Technical Writing program, where you can take writing classes that are geared towards teching the mechanics of writing. It may not be a major, just some electives you can add on to another course of study. The focus wouldn't be on creative writing (aka poetry and fi...

Re: nielsen ratings
When my wife and I were a "Neilsen family" for a month I just wrote down the shows I liked whether or not I actually watched them. So a lot of Simpsons and Seinfeld, maybe a cool public tv music special or something, and that was about it. It had nothing to do with reality. I wonder how many other p...

Re: Ahhhhh, Cold Weather Emergency... Watch Out!
Your weather machine looks like it would work pretty well. Just don't leave it outside in sub-freezing temperatures.
34 years of Chicago winters, and I'll never get used to it. I always bitch about the cold on days like today, and this crap is just beginning for the year.

Re: English as a Major...
No, that sounds pretty accurate in my recollection. If you are reading excerpts then you are reading them from some survey type of textbook. If there is no textbook on the syllabus then you can assume you are reading the works in their entirety. Yes, it seems like an impossible amount of reading and...

Re: 4-track mods?
If you want to bypass the built-in preamps you can by plugging an external pre or line level signal into the "stereo inputs", then route that to the l/r buss, then record the buss. You'll bypass the preamp, channel fader, eq section by going in through this line level input.

Re: Studio Projects VTB-2....?
Yeah who knows, there doesn't seem to be any information on their website about it. It was supposedly "more" than a dual channel VTB-1 but as for specifics who knows. Alan Hyatt has been spotted on this messageboard so maybe he might see this and pipe up. Maybe you should start a thread about Joemee...

Re: tascam 464 vs. a new 424mk3
Yes, two auto locate points are available on the 424. Also, you can repeat play a section (say, when you're practicing an overdub). There are 4 direct outs, on RCA jacks. The 424 MKIII is disappearing off the shelves of the major music retailers and I've heard it is no longer in production. You can ...

Yeah, and Bob Moog in '08 too. He'll teach us a thing'r'two about enlightenment.

Re: any english majors?
And yeah, that is true, but it can't make me cry or even come close because it all seems so cognitive and analytically produced. All the phrases seem too carefully chosen to me. There is no spontaneity so everything seems contrived and artificial. I hate to get in the middle of King Kong vs. Godzil...

Re: any english majors?
English undergrad studies will certainly help you develop your skills at the things you are looking to improve them at. No doubt about that. And I think you would like it, based on what you've said. I think TomS' idea is even better though. Different arts and different disciplines force you to think...

Re: any english majors?
I have a BA in English, and I decided there are pluses and minuses. You're correct that it's very helpful in that it teaches you to think and write precisely and analytically. Plus you strengthen the skills needed to read beyond a text, to evaluate what the writer is trying to say or trying to manip...

And when you get something that you're really happy with, write down all the details you can about placement, settings, etc. so you have some place to start from next time. Also if something really sounds horrible, write it down too so you know what won't work. Very jealous of your gear and room!!! ...

Re: I'm scared of phase problems with drum micing...
I try to get one portion of the sound to where I'm really happy with it (I usually use a single OH). Then I place the other mics one at a time. I get each new mic to where it sounds good individually, then combine it with the OH and then all mics together. If one of the "other" mics is causing phase...
