Re: DIY drum sample pack
If you don't need to hold down a groove, do you need to hire a professional? - he owns the local drum shop and has access to a big variety of instruments - sells his own brand of custom-built snare drums - has much better control of dynamics than I do - I can concentrate on the technical/sound desi...

DIY drum sample pack
I'm thinking about hiring a pro drummer I know, to record a bunch of one-shot drum samples for personal use in my mixes. Like it or not, sample augmentation (or outright replacement) has become a standard tool in modern music production, clients aren't as reluctant about is they used to be, and some...

Re: Getting motivated on your own music recording projects.
Unless you're extremely experienced (or jaded), you could try and see it as an opportunity to try new technical approaches, without the pressure to justify the time to paying clients. But that's an idealistic proposition, as I know from experience. When I get really serious about one of my own creat...

dynamic mics and speaker coils?
Just curious if anyone has ever looked into the phenomenon and if there is any info about it out there... Not worried about the implications for "correct" micing, just the physics involved. When close-micing a guitar or bass speaker with a dynamic mic, it occured to me that the magnetic activity bet...

Re: Steve Albini, RIP
Shocking, unexpected news!
I can't think of anyone from whom I've picked up so little about gear yet so much about the craft, than Steve Albini.

Re: Channel Strip Plugins
Here it's a toss-up between
- Brainworx Amek 9099, where I find the EQ's Auto Listen feature an absolute time-saver.
- SSL´s own CS2...easy to use, sounds like you expect it to, AAND you can do that compressor thing (which the Amek can't)

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?
Very happy tracking with a bunch of 500 format Great Rivers into RND551 EQs, here.
The GR's Loading switch plus four high-quality transformers in that combo definitely take you to a very familiar sonic place.
I haven't had a chance to hear it next to a real-deal 1073, but I don't really miss that.

What part of the new process do you have a hard time adapting to, what is it you're missing from your former way of doing things?

What's with the little tape reels?
Y'know, next to the thread titles?
White, yellow, turning, static...
So far I know: a little red dot on the left means that I've posted in that thread.
Also: what are the red pages that appear on some threads next to the reel?
Hope this is the right place to ask, thanks.

Re: Saturation Tools and Tricks
I'm only in the early stages of discovery of this, at least on the software side of things. (Running preamps hot is practically my recording S.O.P.) I've dabbled with Saturn2, but tended to get overwhelmed by the options...I need to put some more time into this. My most used plugins currently are th...

Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques
Lately I've been favoring a single LDC (currently either a MG UM70 or Brauner Phanthera), above the snare, as the only OH. BUT...I augment it with a stereo x/y setup, about knee-high, in line with the snare and kick, and at the same distance from the snare as the top mic. These 3 mics alone will giv...
