Re: Mixing from analog to PC - what software?
try Goldwave - it's a pretty basic stereo recorder/editor, and sonically very good. What you put in is what you get out. Trial version at http://www.goldwave.com, and it's cheap if you decide to buy. Personally, I use an earlier 16 bit version, and haven't tried their latest, but expect it would wor...

Re: dbx 117 compressor/expander
I've used two of them for a few years now - very punchy, warm sound - though not hugely controllable - and quite noisy! The cable hookup is a bit odd, and takes a bit of figuring if there's no manual. It's a mono unit, so bear that in mind. I generally run it into the signal chain as a pre amp, as th...

Re: can anyone talk to me about the yamaha md8?
the md8 is thin sounding compared to ADAT(you'll have to work at warmth), but you do have fab track bouncing, easy operation, and the best on the fly punch in I've ever used, bar none. The eq is nominal. Fixed hi and lo, with sweepable mids. Nothing special, but workable, and you don't need an externa...

Re: producer deals
there's nothing standard anymore, unfortunately; but I always insist my points are from record 1, no recouping of anything; bands deals are structured so that they're the ones lumbered with advances for any damn thing the label can think of. I also never agree to any studio costs deducted from my fe...

try Jon Cohrs at speenlessmastering.com - he's a great guy, fabulous ears, and you won't find anyone more accomodating or affordable (no, it's not me!) I believe he has a profile here at tape op, as he does some work with Larry.

Brenell 2 track teething problem
I recently got a lovely old Brenell all tube 2 track (1968). All works well, except for input levels going in; whether it's mic/line or just using the input stage as an amp, levels are quiet..and getting quieter! Tape playback is fine and very loud. I suspect it's a tube or two in the input amp stag...

Re: Anyone ever use an Akai 1/4 2-track?
all depends what model you're talking about, though genrally they're all 7 1/2 ips, and you'll think they sound muddy compared to modern stuff. The typical 4000 is not great. Some of their higher end ones are a bit more useable, or maybe the early m8 with tube pre amps if you want that kind of sound...

Re: Yanks on tour in Europe - voltage converter vs. regulato
I've been using their converters just fine, though note that the plugs on these are US 3 pin, so you need a UK adaptor (buy this from them too). The only way this works properly is to connect the EU adaptor (which comes with the unit) to the US plug, then the UK adaptor to the EU adaptor. This has b...

Re: 50s/60s Jazz Piano Sound
likely a ribbon or U47, no eq at all. A fair amount of tube and tape compression. Even with a terrific mic (condenser), it will be hard to emulate the warmth, as everything in a modern signal path is so clean. The KM 84s, or even an 87 will emphasise the highs - so compensate as needed by mic placem...

Re: Recording Workshop
I just confirmed I'll be in the US to do a workshop/production masterclass this May in Tucson. Cost is around $100. There are a lot of low cost, high end programs like this in the UK, with some really top notch people involved..(I'm in the top 60 leading UK producers now, shameless plug!)and an equi...

Re: Recording Workshop
5k for 8 weeks! Frankly, you'd be better off spending half of that on some gear and using the remainder hiring someone knowledgeable to help set you up and give some mentoring. If you don't have any recording gear, there won't be any work - and studios will not be hiring. Most jobs go via word of mo...
