Re: Considering going back in time with an old MOTU interface
I had a motu 828 1st gen, it was not the greatest in terms of reliability or sound quality. Maybe the the 2nd gen was better in both regards, but I wouldn't throw too much money at some 20 year old budget digital audio converters.

Re: Name 3 core mics
I've had good luck with the nady rsm-5 for an afforable ribbon. The nice worker bee is an amazing buy right now for $70 at sweetwater I like the sennheiser e906 a lot, though it might be pricey for starting out. I see behringer does a knock-off, but I don't have experience with it. I like the blue e...

A handful of k&m 210/9 stands. With the usd / euro exchange rate in my favor I ordered them from Germany for about 40% less than us prices. Though I have to deal with converters for the 3/8 mic threads. Figure I'll use loc-tite to keep them attached to the stands.

audient evo4 is about $130, it plays nice with an sm7b, especially with a durham mic booster in between them:

a gentleman and a scholar. Never met him in person (I think he came to a DC TOMB meetup once but I was working late) but he was always a great presence here.

Re: Best mic for acoustic in live setting?
I tend to like the sound of sound hole pickups (I've used LR baggs & dean Markey ones) through a PA better than most built in piezo pickups. Agree with others here that mic'ing in a live band situation can be awfully tricky.

Re: ADVICE: send in my re20 or fix myself?
I did the foam replacement. It was a PITA but doable, and I'm not the best at these things. I wasn't having a problem with thin sound though, but getting a lot of noise since the diaphragm was moving around. I think given you don't know what the problem is, it might be worth sending it in to get che...

Re: pres on Focusrite interfaces?
When I had a gen1 scarlett I rarely used the pres unless I was running out of tracks, they were decent but not ready for prime time. With the clarett pre4 usb I'm perfectly happy using the preamps on most anything (with the cathedral pipes signal booster where needed), with or without the 'air' sett...

Maybe try joining us for one of our monthly Reaper mixing contests. You get to work with some professionally recorded tracks, and mix just with reaper's included plugins and jsfx. Compare your mix to others. At the end you can download project files from the other participants and see how yours comp...

Just thought I'd mention that I've restarted a reaper mix competition that Dave Keehl had been running previously. Visit https://reamixed.com for more details.

Re: HOT mix/mastering levels and streaming services
I think you might be bumping into the 'loudness penalty.' Check out this site: https://www.loudnesspenalty.com/ Basically if your tracks are going over a certain average loudness they will get turned down by most services. IF you're targeting specifically Spotify you can try to adjust your mixes so ...

Re: Trying to recreate Camel Crusher
The free effects at http://klanghelm.com might do what you want. IVGI offers a lot of saturation color and MJUCjr and DC1A primarily compress but also saturate a bit. Their paid effects are affordable and even better (more options at least).
