I also found out about this "in between" ego bullshit on my own. I just figured that's what fame did, until I started working with people who were on that next level. Until just recently, I'd been doing most of my work from my bedroom. Somehow, I landed a gig with one of my idols. Before he came ove...

No idea, but I must profess my love for all things Michael Gira. Angels of Light's "How I Loved You" is one of my favourite (and favourite-sounding) records ever. ... and ONLY Gira could make this album work. Most songs are two chords and too long for any other band to pull it off. This album is my...

Blocking out noise from one wall.

I'm opening a studio here in Toronto located in a nice building. However, my neighbour listens to Van Halen REALLY loud sometimes and it comes through the walls. I've got nothing against Van Halen, but it's really out of control. I'm going to introduce myself and see if I can do anything on their si...

Seeing GYBE live would have blown your minds. I saw them 6-7 times and every time they nearly knocked me on my ass. The recordings don't even come close. They never really got it captured on tape.

Nope, that wasn't me. I just did a few Canadian dates when their usual guy had to go home early. Hopefully I can do a few more dates with them next year. They're really some of the nicest guys ever and their live show is amazing.

Re: Manitoba + Caribou - How!?

If you have heard of this guy, do you have any insight as to how he gets such lush production? What kind of gear do you think he uses to get the wonderful vintage sounds, and what kind of techniques to manage such massively layered compositions? A TapeOp interview with Dan Snaith would be incredibl...

Hey man. It's Ryan Mills.

The arts and crafts label set me up for a temp US work visa for that last tour I was on. The piece of paper I got is a "P2". I have no idea what it cost, but it's good for a year. You'll need that and a passport. If you need more info, call me.

I have the TwinQCS - the older version - and I love it. The stepped compressor takes a while to figure out (as opposed to a simple ratio/attack/release format) but it works well. I typically use it for bass guitar and some vocals. It does exactly what I want it to.
