i have a 2007 15" macbook pro whose fans are CRAZY loud and run all the time. It makes recording quiet parts very difficult (and almost everything I record or sing is very quiet).
It's about time for me to get a new Mac, and I'm open to not using a laptop ?
What kind should I get?

Butch Vig wants to produce your song
I work for a charity called The Pablove Foundation, a non-profit that's dedicated to fighting children's cancer. We're hosting an auction right now to raise money, and one of the items up for bidding is a day in a studio with BUTCH VIG, of Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins/Garbage/Green Day fame. You can re...

One of my favorite violin sounds was recorded with a similar set of ingredients. I put the SM57 very close to the f hole, almost touching (over the shoulder of the player to not interfere with bow strokes), and then the small condenser a foot in front. Panned so the 57 sound is at 11 o'clock and the...

low end mixing suggestions?
After getting a mix back from a mixer I had been very excited to work with (and after reading the Deerhoof interview), it's instead been determined that it makes a lot more sense for me to mix my recordings myself. And I think they're close right now, but I'm finding the weakest parts of the mixes a...

my Roland MC-303: TONS of Line Noise
I've got an MC-303 Groovebox that I picked up used for very cheap. I've played around with them before and I like some of the sounds. Mine didn't come with its own power source. It requires 9v/500mA. I've got a 9v/600mA adapter for a Korg with the polarity diagram oriented the same way, so I thought...

the eeriest track i've heard in the last few years is "Hana" by Asa-Chang and Jun Ray. it's the first track off their record "Jun Ray Song Chang" on Leaf. it sort of inverts classical indian music's idea of tabla rhythms being mimicked by spoken syllables ( bols ) and instead, they take spoken chine...

I'd guess that it's a latency issue. are you really loaded up on plug-ins? what are your settings for the HW Buffer Size and the CPU Usage? i had a similar issue after i started using a different hard drive for my audio. the data just wasn't bouncing fast enough. i'd second the recommendation to do ...

weird ftp/mp3 issue
i've noticed recently that a couple of mp3s i've uploaded to my ftp server (using Fetch 4.0) have turned out a little glitchy when i load them up off the web. playing the same mp3 on my itunes shows that the file is fine, but the uploaded version will have some sporadic digital pops. anyone have any...

i'd second pretty much all the stuff that's been mentioned already. i'll add Caural to the list. his ep "Blurred July" is really great. only 4 songs, but a good introduction. also, Dabrye, on Ghostly International, has a good record called One/Three. there are mp3s for download on epitonic.com. some...

people seem to have slept on Start Breaking My Heart, which is very different from Up In Flames and Milk of Human Kindness, but it's still great. i was listening to a lot of IDM type stuff when it came out...then and still now, it stands out to me as a great record. Up In Flames is probably my favor...

Re: Manitoba + Caribou - How!?
A TapeOp interview with Dan Snaith would be incredible reading, as he always keeps me amazed. check out issue #37 (sept/oct 2003). i love his stuff, too! have you seen a live show? the performance in LA supporting Up in Flames was amazing, and an inverse of his recordings -- the drums were all live...

the credit probably goes to my violinist and her violin, but i am always happy with how her tracks turn out. i have the hardest time with electric bass. i think my acoustic guitar recordings are okay, functional, but i want them to be amazing, and they just don't seem to come out rich enough for my ...
