Re: creative writing
If you like Murakami and/or Carver you should check out Paul Auster - particularly the New York Trilogy. Very precise and, well, austere prose. Good stuff.

Re: so... i'm not gonna vote.
If there were a choice on the ballot for "I hate Bush," I would probably check that. But I'm not going to vote Kerry just 'cause I hate Bush. If Kerry got in, he'd probably just make the dems the scapegoats for all the shit that's about to hit the fan thanks to the current administration. And though...

Re: Making the club experience more comfortable
I agree that early shows and non-smoky clubs are nice but I'm really surprised that anybody would want quieter shows. Get some earplugs if the volume bothers you. And if you want to socialize go to some other bar and pop a quarter in the jukebox - don't go to a show just to talk all over a band's se...

Re: What's Mark Robinson up to lately?
I got a solo album of his, Origami & Urbanism, recently and it's quite dull.
But have you heard his stuff with Flin Flon? They've put out a couple of really great albums in the the last 3 or 4 years. It seems like a sort of natural progression from Unrest-->Air Miami-->Flin Flon. Great drummer.

Re: akai headrush.
the 2nd-4th outputs are for the tape echo effect. they're like outputs to 4 tape delay heads if that makes sense. to see for yourself just plug each numbered output into a different amp (don't use the "mix" output), set the thing to tape echo, and play around with it. good for panning echoes all ove...

play music with me in San Francisco
Hey - I'm looking to play some music with people in San francisco. Instead of describing genres/influences you can listen to mp3s here: http://www.therhombus.org/sounds.html or read a review here: http://www.splendidezine.com/review.html?reviewid=108850355227312 Basically the rhombus has largely bee...

Re: Blond Redhead:MIAB-> how can i rip them off most accu
I haven't listened too closely yet but the whole album sounds kind of weird to me - all the instruments blend together but not in the old analog way. Maybe it's just all those damn strings, but there seems to be some strange paste in the mix that I can't quite put my finger on. Reverbs? I seem to re...

Re: Gonna be visiting San Francisco soon
I'd be up to have a drink with the SF tapeop crowd if it ever happens. And I would say you can definitely live comfortably on 35k/yr in the city. I do it w/out a car, and the public transportation is pretty decent though it sucks to not be able to get out of the city sometimes. I like alot of SF ban...

Re: good condenser for distortified guitar
blissed and gone, but do you think the neuman TLM103, and or AT4050 are good all rounders as well for things such as drums, and vocals as well as guitars. I want this mic I'm gonna buy to be to be like THE mic for my collection as I don't have many others right now. I use the 4050 as "THE mic in my...

Re: Hip but inscrutable NPR music reviews
If you, Mr./Mrs. reviewer, are so smart about music, make me, Mr./Mrs. reader, understand something about the music. If you can't do that, maybe you're not so smart, are you? Are you smarty pants? well, I think I disagree with you about the value and purpose of music criticism. the only way I think...

Re: recording drums with the mbox
i would say the best way to go would be to get a good mix going of the whole kit thru a mixer and then record the stereo outs from there into the mbox. of course you wouldn't be able to tweak individual drum sounds in pt if you take that route but if you take the time to get the kit sounding nice an...

Re: how good is don caballero...
they were a totally great band. i just listened to american don this morning - it's not as heavy as the older stuff but still completely mind blowing. i only saw them once and they sneakily set up a drummer in the back of the club during the show and then BLAM. I about peed my pants. and I haven't h...

"NPR needs to do music reviews but they need to be written so all listeners are able to understand the criticism and the music."
Hm, so basically just cater to the lowest common denominator like the rest of the dial? Good call dude!
