I think RAM is most important, and once you have more you can increase the RAM buffer to get more tracks. Of course there is give and take there. Check the manual of your recording software, and it should have tips for optimization.

The RNC uses TRS connectors differently. It is NOT balanced. Tip is "input" Ring is "output" (or the opposite. I can't remember) It is designed so you can use one TRS cable to connect to the channel insert of a small mixer, which are set up the same way. If your mixer or soundcard does not have that...

It is definitely worth it to upsample your tracks for overdubbing. The more you edit, the more the computer will truncate. Having the extra word-length headroom makes a huge difference. Sample-rate is less important. If you want to save space/processing speed, going with 48 or 44khz will not make a ...

You will be fine with a FireWire drive. Just don't cheap out on it cause you'll get a lousy chipset. Oxford is preferred. Just because it has a firewire plug on it doesn't mean it meets the transfer specs.
