ProTools HD Native 10.2 Vs. 12-Core Mac Pro w/ Mountain Lion

Looking for advice. I recently purchased a new 12-core MacPro which shipped with Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8). I am trying to run ProTools 10.2 HD Native. Pro Tools opens and seems to function normally until you try to record something at which point you get the beachball of death and a DAE error messag...

EARTHWORKS MicPre 1022 - Broken? Why is it distorting? HELP!

I own an Earthworks MicPre 1022. 2 Channel MicPre. New, it was super clean and loud and overall jjust great. I used it a lot for my AEAr88 stereo ribbon Mic. DELICIOUS. Then one day it just started acting janky. It says "Zero Distortion Technology" right on the unit but distortion is exactly what I ...

Johnny Cash American recording acoustic gtrs

How delicious is the acoustic gtr sound on those Cash American recordings? Does anyone know how they accomplished that on the first record especially? I'm sure its just a super simple set up with great great gear. Does any one have any suggestions for recording naked acoustic gtrs and making em soun...

Stereo Micing Techniques for Gtr Amps.

I'm looking for suggestions about stereo micing techniques for guitar amps. I'm interested in achieving a big nasty rock and roll guitar sound that works within the framework of a simple Bass/Drums/Gtr/Vox arrangement. Every time I screw around with putting more than one mic on a gtr amp I wind up g...

Mixing a POWER TRIO!!!

One guitar. Bass. Drumset. (w/ a little thing called a vocal as well). That's rock and roll. Live performance. No overdubs. No tricks. I'd like to open a discussion forum to share different approaches to mixing this ferocious species of rock band. The record I'm working on now has mono micing on the...

Re: A discussion of DFA bass sounds (House of JealousLovers

the record I'm refering to above is The Rapture's "House of Jealous Lovers" but the DFA have also produced Radio 4 (Gotham), LCD soundsystem, Pixeltan, Liquid Liquid and you know...tons of other shit too.

A discussion of DFA bass sounds (House of JealousLovers etc)

Hey. I'm a big fan of what James and Tim are doing in NY with the DFA records, especially from an engineering standpoint. I just read a piece in the Village Voice in which James was quoted as saying that he filtered the bass a lot to achieve the signature nastiness of the "House of Jealous Lovers" b...

Fixing Poorly Recorded / Over Compressed Bass in the Mix

I recently have taken on the task of mixing some tracks from a great rock band. They're a power trio w/ a drunkard-genius punkrock frontman and by and large the tracks sound slamming and the performances (all captured completely live) are fantastic. There is one glaring problem. The band recorded th...

Re: Snare Mic???

I've never really had a problem with the 57 on the snare. I think its made for that application. But I totally understand yuor frustration. Remember that 90% of the sound you're hearing is the drum itself. If that drum is tuned properly and sounds beautiful and musical in the room then you've got a ...

Thanks guys. I think I'll go pick this little fucker up. Can I expect this thing to deliver that hard-as-a-rcock kick drum stuff that the regular 160A makes?

Re: Samson C02

Hey. I've got a pair of Samson CO2s and I've got to say I think they suck real bad. I've tried them as overheads for drums and on acoustic gtrs and in both applications they've sounded flat and one dimensional. They work fine especially if you're recording something that sounds great in the first pl...
