Topic: Is recording on 4-track cassette still viable?

I used to mix in the box and occasionally still do but now more often mix to tape, either 1/4" or cassette, using Tascam rackmount units. I like the way tape sounds even with its frequency response limitations, and I enjoy the mixing process mixing in real time through a board and then on to the com...

+1 re. the Fostex VF-16..... I've used it often recording bands live at shows (multing each channel off the board) and it's amazing to have so much control mixing it down later. Drums especially benefit from a post mix. The Fostex does not have the candy that the Roland has but does have the basics....

I like it. I, too have always liked the sound of his electric piano sample on Where It's At. At least I assume it's a sample? Maybe a Wurly, or do you think it's a Rhodes?

Anyway...nice work. What is your recording setup?

238 Example....

Hey all.... Don't mean to hijack thread, but I also really enjoy my 238 (DBX) and have recorded a number of things on the lovely beast. This should possibly go in Listen to My Stuff, but I'm only including it here as it relates to ....the Tascam 238. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFfLqjz-uDw The mu...

Other message boards like this.....

I'm sure they exist... Message boards that primarily feature music reviews from a production perspective, much like this subboard that I so dig. I know that there are artist specific boards aplenty, but what I'd like is what we have here, just more of it. I especially like when a classic piece of mu...

New Tascam 238 8track cassette effort.....

Hey, all.... Here is another example of modest playing, but hopefully improved mixing technique using my Tascam 238. I must say....after years mixing in the box I find it totally liberating to mix in real time through a board, tweaking eq, effect sends, pan/fader as you go. It's a bit terrifying kno...

Tascam 238 'Spearmint.....

Back from the grave, here......consistent lurker/reader, but infrequent poster. Curious what opinions might sprout concerning this modest effort with my Tascam 238....Mostly interested in thoughts to the production/sound....my playing is meh.....attempting a psych feel, to be sure, but 1'st takes ar...

Love this..... Have been recording to my DAW (Adobe Audition) for years, usually using a variety of outboard effects and compressors, and through a board, but always ultimately "printing" to the harddrive, and then mixed in multi-track fashion ITB. Lately, I've been having HUGE fun recording directl...

Tascam 238 Example...Surprisingly pretty Hi-Fi

Hey, all... Recently acquired a Tascam 238 8 track cassette and this is my first experiment with it. I've done a lot with a 234 and really liked the results...surprising for a 4 track cassette. So, imagine my surprise when I tried the 238 and found a little.... very little degradation in sound, but ...

Oh, my..... This is nice...nice...nice. Bravo, my friend. As this is a recording message board, we are all fascinated with the process -- 8 track cassette? Fantastic -- I have a 238 and 234, and 34b RTR myself...love them all! But....I have to say it's the performance that really grabbed me -- I dow...

I, too, am a fan of Donuts.... You know the story of how it was recorded/arranged? J. Dilla was dying of lupus and did practically all of this on his laptop from his hospital bed -- he'd just finished it before he passed on. What I'd like to know is .....did he have the final say on the mix/producti...
