My particular MacBook doesn't seem to have a thunderbolt connection. I was using AudioDesk, which came bundled with the Motu 828 I purchased (Firewire, of course). I never did much with plug-ins, I did very dry recordings with an emphasis on getting the signal right during recording. It was very bas...

Setting up something small and easy - help?

Hey everybody! I have been a long-time reader of the magazine and TOMB and spent a lot of time building an analog studio in my home several years back. Then we had kids, moved to a new house (with little space for a studio) and I left the recording behind. Now I am interested in setting up something...

NS10s and MOTU 828

I am selling my pair of Yamaha NS10s. They have a few nicks and scratches, and one of the speakers has a crumpled dust cover (over the coil) that has not (IMO) affected the sound of the speaker. Pics available upon request. This is a matching pair - $300 plus shipping. Also letting go of my MOTU 828...

Otari MX5050 MkIII 1/2" 8 Track w/extras

As much as it saddens me, it's time to say goodbye to my Otari. I am the second owner and have had the machine for almost seven years. It's in great working condition, recently aligned, and comes with cables (custom made), reels, and alignment tape. I will deliver in the Midwest for the price of gas...

Cheap CD duplication?

Apologies if this is in the wrong thread, I am not sure where the question belongs. I have had a local church youth group in the studio for the last couple of weeks recording a benefit cd for a summer trip to the delta. They are going to be building houses outside of Clarksdale, MS with Habitat for ...

Well, great recommendations as usual. I really appreciate the help. A friend of mine had a Peavey Power Amp (like 800 watts!) that he is letting me use. Sounds ok for now, but I have to keep it way down, obviously. I'm gonna start watching ebay for some of these choices. btw - what's wrong with NS-1...

Good amplifier for NS-10s?

So my receiver, which was basically a home receiver - I think Technics - is finally biting the dust. I have a project in this week so I am just swapping out with the receiver in my home stereo, but I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a permanent replacement? I obviously need accuracy, bu...

Do a good job, and put in some extra time for free if you need to. Work with their budget and definitely make the recording sound like the bands they adore. When they take the cd to their friends house and play it for the first time you want it to pop out of the speakers - you want their friends to ...

keep it simple, but keep variety happening - subtle changes in the levels or even the eqing during mixdown can bring things to the front or back. i try to give each instrument it's own space in the mix - frequency range and pan placement. this is tedious stuff with large numbers of tracks, so it is ...

I have some tapes from a couple of bands. Mainly the 17-18 year old kid power-pop-punk bands who are going to use it as a coaster while playing Halo 2. Will they come back? Probably, when they are 35 and want a remix of their youthful "genius". Hmmm. I guess I could just dump it all down to a hard d...

Yeah. The old adage is "you don't know what you've got til it's gone." Or maybe it's "better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it." Or something like that. Plus, I want to spend the extra cash on the computer, and we all know the resale value of computer upgrades. We'll...

Making the switch ... uh ...

So I'm posting this in rec. tech because I think it is actually a discussion about technique. Whatever. Here goes ... I bought a 1/2" 8 track (Otari) about five years ago. I cabled it up by myself, made a couple of nice recordings, and really got into the sound. I dug it. I don't know what happened,...
