Intelligent mixing software - mixes your song for you!?

[note: I'm out of the loop technology-wise -- mixing ITB with Pro Tools or Reaper is good enough for me. I haven't even gotten into Elastic Audio yet.] I know there is "mastering" software (IzoTope Ozone, etc) which have shite presets for different genres, which gets your song crudely in the ballpar...

Cleaning/reviving an old drum machine - Dr. Groove!

I dug out my Boss DR 202 (Dr. Groove) and noticed buttons sticking, and a general sluggish response on most of the buttons that can only be foreign filth stuck in there. Any advice on how to safely and effectively do this? I'm not sure if I should open it, use Dust-Off or alcohol, etc. Thanks!

OK, so I guess that was my real question: can I use this kind of pedal with a bass and not lose low end? I know there are bass fuzz pedals, but is that really important?

Swollen Pickle Jumbo Fuzz

This fuzz box is pretty badass, with some neat internal controls aside from the normal external knobs. Is there any reason to think this pedal should not be used as a bass guitar fuzz? I'm not 100% sure how that works with chips and resistors and all that. Thanks!

I should've clarified. I don't mind the pitch changing -- it's normal and natural, as opposed to the slice-and-dice and resampling Boooinggggg effect of non-varispeed. However, I think if crap sci-fi TV from the early nineties were morphing faces (VIDEO!), then there should be much better technology...

I dropped a hard drive down some concrete steps when I was 90% done mixing a record, but had yet to bounce anything. I was sure it was hosed, but the drive worked fine for a couple weeks. Then it died. Since everything seemed [miraculously] to be ok, I never backed it up. That's what's called learni...

So far we are all in agreement -- there are some workarounds you can use to avoid the nastiness inherent in digital time-stretching. I still don't get what technological hiccups make this the case, tho. protools' half-speed playback sounds pretty good. Hold down the shift key and hit play. of course...

time stretching sucks

Here's something I've always wondered about: why does time-stretching suck so bad? You can slow a tape recording down to half-speed and it sounds fluid, but there doesn't seem to be a good modeling program for doing this. Even if you take something recorded at 16bit/44.1k and throw it onto tape and ...

Don't do anything at all, but give it back to them and lie, saying you were able to get everything nice and lively again. The placebo effect is perfectly applicable in audio.

PS. Lying is a sin.

Hearing getting MORE sensitive?

I have an iPod and some Bose headphones and I listen to a lot of music when I'm out and about. I started turning on the Treble Reducer in the EQ settings on my iPod for everything but classical and audio books. There's almost no record dark enough for me to disengage the high freq cut. This setting ...

LUTHIER! Replacing all my Strat's frets with hardened steel

I want to get the same hardened stainless steel frets used on the Parker Fly to replace the stock ones on my '62 Reissue Strat. Any ideas how much this would cost? Thanks guys.

Non-dorky Phish? (I know, how 90's)

I heard a song called 'Waves' from a Phish record called Round Room and love the sound of it. The vocals are not my taste, but the drums, guitar, keyboards and bass are brilliant. I find most of their early stuff too dorky and kinda funky just for laughs. And the vocals on that early stuff, not to m...

A perfect analogy for this thread:

Which is better: using proper grammar or knowing what you're talking about?

Analog(y) ... God, the puns are terrible.
