Re: Punk Rock Orchestra

Damn check out the images section of their site... look at that schweet board at skywalker. I have no idea what it is, but it sure is purty. I just got done reading an interview with Leslie Ann Jones, the engineer in the pictures, and she was praising the Neve VXS that they have at Skywalker. I'm a...

Re: guitar thru a reel to reel...

I've got an old Revere (later became wollansak-sp?) that I use for a practice amp at home. I think it dates from 1949. Sounds good by itself, though the machine itself hums a little. It's got a speaker out on it that I've run to other cabinets for recording. Nice, clean, old tubey goodness. And its ...

Re: Utilitarian Compressors

I'll probably get reamed for suggesting this, but if you want something on the cheap for just smoothing things out, you might want to look at the aphex 108. They can be had for peanuts these days. I think I paid $80 for mine. I don't have the golden ears of most of the people here, but the thing sou...

Re: Articulate Live Vocal Mic?

I'll vote for one of the sennheisers. I've got an e845 that I've been using for live stuff and it sounds wonderful for my voice. It's got a nice, tight pickup pattern so you can get it up pretty hot for your "whisper" passages, without it feeding back. Granted, I haven't tried out as many different ...

Re: Recording Paranormal Activity

Interesting observation about EVP... do a google search and compare the differences between European and American explanations for it. The Americans (yes, there is an Amereican EVP Society) just automatically jump to the conclusion that it's ghosts. The Europeans (I think it was a Dutch scientist wh...

Re: any recommendations on a distortion/overdrive pedal?

Check out the reissue of the DOD 250 preamp/overdrive. They run $30-something new. I just picked one up, and holy-shit! it sounds awesome. Two knobs, only about ten components on the PC board. The most noticable quality about it is it doesn't suck out any of the low frequencies like almost any of th...

Re: Mark Knofler's guitar tone

Haven't heard the song in awhile, but if my memory serves me correctly, it sounded like a wah pedal in a stationary position or some other type of band-pass/resonant filter.

Re: 4-track mods?

My 424 (a mkIII) has direct outs. Look around back there. What input circuitry are you trying to bypass? Have you looked at your manual? It's got flow charts and the routing seems pretty flexible for a four track. You may have everything you want already, with maybe a couple flips of some switches. ...

Re: need web critque

Here's a quick fix for mouseovers on your menu row. Paste this right above the </head> line: <style type="text/css"> <!-- .styleA {background-color: ffffff } .styleB {background-color: 000000 } --!> </style> Change your table to have a cellpadding of "2". replace all of your <td>'s with: <td class="...

Re: need web critque

Looks good! I noticed a couple nit-picky things: On the Clients page, at the bottom is the sentence, "A list of some of the artists have had the privilege to work with in the past." Throw an "I" or "we" in there. Also, seriously look over your copy on the CCE page. There are are a few mis-spelled wo...

Production Cliches

What overdone production techniques drive you nuts? Lately, for me it's when a song starts out deliberately "lo-fi", only to be revealed in all it's shimmery goodness when the chorus kicks in. I was listening to the last Hot Hot Heat record the other night, and this is all over it. The irony is that...

Re: Indie Labels By Decade

70's- Stiff Records...

Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Ian Drury, Madness, Devo, Tracy Ulmann, Graham Parker, Dave Stewart, The Damned, etc, etc, etc.

Or are we only counting American labels?
