if yr into B&S track down the song Lazy Line Painter Jane, recorded live in a church hall, it's astonishing, total wall of sound stuff, you can hear bits of piano in there that are just sitting under the organ and bass pumping along with no ego, just another part of The Sound, and the reverb is all ...

Re: Not enough snare in OH

if yr on a computer you could copy your overhead track, put a gate on it and try and get it too open on the snare hits... I like throwing something like this thru a stereo delay, you have your mono overhead, with the snare getting feed in stereo thru the delay, it doesn't even have to sound great, j...

Re: Recording your own vocals is how to get better though...

you said you have preformed these songs before so maybe this doesn't apply, but I've found before I even think about singing I mae a rough mix, stick on my MP3 Player. I listen to it on the bus, when I'm out walking, whenever, just randomly, stick a song with a vocal you like or think might apply on...

Tascam Porta Two

I've been offered a nice deal on a Tascam Porta Two Cassette four track, one of the late 80's type models with the funky VUs (not the 02). I'm probably going to take it for shits n' giggles, be nice to muck around with a bit... have notions of recording drums, varispeed them a bit on it and dumping ...

Re: Dixie

S.O.S. magazine (a pretty good British recording/engineering rag) did a piece about the recording of 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' in their 'Classic Tracks' column. It's not free on their site, but it's well worth tracking down if you want to peek at the magic. http://www.soundonsound.com/s...

it's kind of a fact that if you put on a hat of any kind it will create some kind of frequency shift to what you actually hear vs. what you hear with out a hat on - so to me it seems like it could kind of be a no-no to do any kind of mixing/mastering or even tracking decisions while wearing one. Th...
